Promoting the role of youth unions in preventing and combating drowning

Summer is also the time when children have more time to play and participate in outdoor activities. However, drowning accidents are still a constant concern for many families and the whole society. With the spirit of initiative and responsibility for the community, Youth Union chapters at all levels in the province have implemented many practical and meaningful activities to prevent and combat drowning for children, actively contributing to building a safe and healthy playing environment for children during the summer.

Thanh Son District Youth Union opened a free swimming class in the program "Peak day of volunteer soldiers supporting children in difficult circumstances" in Giap Lai commune.

Amidst the hot early summer sun, the swimming pool of Cao Xa Secondary School (Lam Thao District) is still bustling with laughter. This is a free swimming class organized by the Lam Thao District Youth Union in collaboration with the Cao Xa Secondary School Youth Union for children in difficult circumstances. Under the dedicated guidance of experienced physical education teachers, each floating movement, basic swimming skills and skills to handle incidents in the water... are conveyed to the students in a lively and easy-to-understand way.

Comrade Cao Xuan Huy, Secretary of Lam Thao District Youth Union, shared: “Swimming classes are held from 7am to 10am. Not only are they survival skills, swimming lessons also help children have a healthy playground, strengthen friendships and be more aware of self-protection. Free swimming classes have contributed to building a safe living environment for children - something that the Youth Union is always actively aiming for."

In Thanh Son district, a free swimming class for children in difficult circumstances was opened in the program "Peak day of volunteer soldiers supporting children in difficult circumstances" organized by the District Youth Union in early June in Giap Lai commune, attracting dozens of children to participate. Taking place from June 1-8, the swimming class will instruct children in swimming techniques; at the same time, help equip them with basic knowledge and skills to ensure safety when participating in underwater activities; learn about the causes, risks and ways to prevent and combat drowning; as well as learn first aid in case of drowning. Thanks to the free class, children have become more confident when swimming and know how to handle situations if they are in danger.

Not only in Lam Thao district or Thanh Son district, but also throughout Phu Tho province, the movement of teaching free swimming and equipping children with skills to prevent drowning is being deployed simultaneously by Youth Union bases under the direction of the Provincial Youth Union.

Since the beginning of the year, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee has issued a thematic plan to strengthen propaganda and education on drowning prevention skills for children; and directed Youth Union bases to simultaneously deploy many practical activities. 100% of district, town and city Youth Unions have organized free swimming classes and mobilized socialization to build more safe swimming pools. In addition, Youth Union bases have also installed hundreds of warning signs at ponds, lakes, rivers and streams... with high risk of drowning in the province.

The Youth Union has integrated a variety of knowledge on swimming skills; first aid, instructions on how to handle drowning situations into the Youth Union - Team meetings, programs, and extracurricular activities at schools. Coordinated with the police force of communes and towns; Women's Unions at all levels, Red Cross Associations... to promote extensive propaganda to all people, especially children, to raise public awareness of drowning prevention and control through radio programs; systems of banners, slogans; propaganda leaflets; articles, images, video clips on social networking platforms Facebook, Zalo, Tiktok... Thanks to the diversity and closeness in the approach, the forms of propaganda deployed by the Youth Union have contributed to changing the awareness and behavior of the community, helping children and adults to be more proactive in drowning prevention.

Drowning prevention is one of the key contents in the Summer Youth Volunteer Campaign and the Youth Union's work program in 2025. Each youth union member will be an active propagandist, helping to spread awareness and skills on drowning prevention in the community. From there, affirming the role of the Youth Union in carrying out the task of protecting, caring for and educating children.
