National Highway 1 from Dong Ha City to Quang Tri Town has many damaged spots causing traffic insecurity, in particular there is a section of hundreds of meters of road surface with cracks and subsidence, creating high embankments and many "potholes" and "elephant holes".
According to Quang Tri Newspaper reporters on the morning of December 26, on National Highway 1 passing through Dong Ha City and Trieu Phong District, there are dozens of damaged road surfaces.

Specifically, the asphalt road surface has many "potholes", "elephant holes", many of which have been temporarily patched with concrete by the management unit, some "elephant holes" still exist, causing traffic safety problems. There are holes on the road surface nearly 1 meter wide, quite deep, with a very high risk of causing accidents. In the morning of the same day, vehicles and workers of the road repair unit proceeded to clean up the signs at the damaged spots that had been patched with concrete.
Mr. Cao Thanh Binh, Head of the Quang Tri Regional Road Management Department (Truong Thinh Group, the unit managing, operating and exploiting the route) said that in the current weather conditions, the unit can only temporarily patch the road with concrete and place warning signs.
“After inspection, there were 14 damaged spots on the route managed by the unit, with a total area of 26.7 m2 of road surface. In the long term, we will bring in a motorbike fleet for repair. The repair plan has been approved, now we just have to wait for favorable weather,” said Mr. Binh.
Meanwhile, a 100-meter section of National Highway 1 passing through the center of Quang Tri town was severely damaged. The road surface was cracked and sunk in long sections, creating high embankments and numerous potholes. Because of the heavy traffic on the route, traffic in this section posed many potential safety risks.
According to some residents here, the road is frequently damaged and has been repaired countless times, even having its asphalt resurfaced but still not completely repaired.
Mr. Vo Tuyen, who owns a house facing the national highway and is selling food, said that this road section is most damaged during the rainy season, with a high risk of traffic accidents and affecting people's lives.
“Houses near the road cannot sleep at night because of the loud noise when trucks and containers roll over the damaged area. I hope that the authorities will fix this section completely because it is too dangerous for pedestrians and affects people’s lives,” said Mr. Tuyen. According to some other residents, when cars pass by, rocks and soil from the damaged road surface shoot into the windows of their houses, which is very dangerous.
Mr. Ngo Van Doan, Head of Road Management Office II.5 (Road Management Area II - the unit that manages, operates, and exploits the route), said that at this time of year, there is a lot of rain, the unit discovered "potholes" but can only temporarily handle them, combined with warnings to ensure traffic safety.
“In the current rainy weather, when the traffic volume is high, the concrete fillings will come loose immediately, and can only be temporarily repaired. When the weather is sunny, the unit will have to repair the entire stretch to fix it,” said Mr. Doan.
It is known that, in order to contribute to improving the quality of exploitation and ensuring traffic safety on National Highway 1 through the area, in 2021, the People's Committee of Quang Tri town proposed the Provincial People's Committee and the Road Management Department II to invest in upgrading the road surface system, drainage system along the left side of the route (from Tran Hung Dao Street to Hai Ba Trung Street) and replace the traffic light cluster at the intersection of Le Duan - Hai Ba Trung Street.
