During the Lunar New Year, in addition to reuniting with family and friends, many Chinese people also choose to travel abroad. According to a report by Ctrip - a leading travel platform in China, Southeast Asian countries are the most popular overseas travel destinations during this holiday. In an article published on February 12, Xinhua - the official news agency of the Chinese Government - said that cross-border tourism between China and Vietnam "exploded" during this year's Lunar New Year. The number of Chinese and Vietnamese tourists traveling to each other's countries increased. Guangxi - which borders Vietnam - is witnessing a significant increase in cross-border tourism. Xinhua quoted Xiong Chu Zhou, an official at the Youyiguan Immigration Border Inspection Station (Guangxi), as saying that 40,000 tourists are expected to depart from here or arrive here for cross-border tourism during this occasion.
For example, Vu Thi Sen, a 20-year-old tourist from northern Vietnam, arrived at Huu Nghi Quan on February 12 with three of her friends to begin her trip to China. The tourist said she had been to China many times, having visited Nanning and Shanghai, according to Xinhua. According to Xinhua, the Ban Gioc Waterfall Scenic Area (Vietnam) - Detian Waterfall Scenic Area (China) saw an increase in tourists from China and Vietnam during this holiday. This is a cross-border tourism cooperation area between Vietnam and China, which has been piloted for tourists to cross from September 15, 2023. "The cooperation area has attracted many Vietnamese tourists since its pilot operation. According to the feedback from the questionnaire we sent to tourists, they are very satisfied with the opening of this cooperation area," said Yang Zong Jun, assistant to the general director of the Detian Waterfall Scenic Area Operation Company. Dongxing (Guangxi), a city on the China-Vietnam border, is also seeing a boom in cross-border tourism during the Lunar New Year holiday. Data from the Dongxing Checkpoint shows that it handled more than 5.3 million arrivals in 2023.
