Concentrating resources to control African swine fever

This afternoon, December 21, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong chaired a meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee for Animal Disease Prevention and Control to assess the situation in 2023 and propose urgent measures to promptly control and control African swine fever in the area.

According to the report of the Provincial Steering Committee for Animal Disease Prevention, in 2023, the province had 2 small outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease on 22 buffaloes and cows in A Vao commune, Dakrong district and Vinh Khe commune, Vinh Linh district because the buffaloes and cows had not been vaccinated. There were no outbreaks of avian influenza, lumpy skin disease in buffaloes and cows, and blue ear disease in pigs.

African swine fever reappeared at the end of October 2023 in the pig herds of 2 households in Hai Le village, Hai Le commune, Quang Tri town and Tham Trieu village, Trieu Tai commune, Trieu Phong district. As of 10:00 a.m. on December 21, 2023, African swine fever had occurred in 7/9 localities, namely Trieu Phong, Dakrong, Huong Hoa, Cam Lo, Gio Linh districts, Dong Ha city and Quang Tri town, with 335 households in 28 communes, wards and towns having infected pigs.

According to statistics, the province has a total herd of 2,050 sick, dead or culled pigs with a total weight of 95,024 kg. The province has 10 outbreaks in 4 districts and cities that have passed 21 days; only Huong Hoa, Dakrong districts and Dong Ha city have declared the end of the epidemic. Currently, there are 18 communes, wards and towns in 3 districts of Trieu Phong, Gio Linh and Quang Tri town where the epidemic has not passed 21 days.

At the meeting, representatives of departments, branches and localities exchanged, discussed and pointed out limitations, difficulties and obstacles in implementing disease prevention measures in livestock, especially in controlling African swine fever.

The leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requested to thoroughly handle dead pigs, sick pigs, and pigs suspected of having African swine fever; focus on handling barns and animal waste at breeding sites and households; strictly control the transportation of sick pigs to destruction pits; strengthen information and propaganda about the dangerous nature of African swine fever and the risk of recurrence...

Concluding the meeting, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Ha Sy Dong requested that authorities at all levels and specialized agencies must identify the current key and urgent task of focusing resources to control African swine fever.

In particular, localities must assign specific responsibilities and tasks to members of the Steering Committee for Animal Disease Prevention and Control at district and commune levels; request timely reporting of results and problems in epidemic areas for resolution.

Regarding disease surveillance, it is required that villages, hamlets, communes, wards and towns mobilize the participation of relevant organizations, unions and sectors to coordinate with specialized agencies to proactively monitor diseases in pig herds in each household, trading and transport establishments and markets, especially in communes that have gone 10 days without outbreaks of disease in pigs.

Localities must establish appraisal councils and teams to destroy sick pigs in accordance with regulations to serve as a basis for building support records for farmers. Strengthen information, propaganda, and guidance for farmers to implement hygiene and disinfection measures to prevent the spread of disease. Quickly detect, isolate, control, and thoroughly treat sick pigs and pigs suspected of being sick, to prevent new outbreaks.
