A ceremony to welcome the submarine USS New Jersey into the US fleet took place at Sandy Hook Bay in New Jersey on the morning of September 14 (local time), according to the news site Northjersey.com .

Fighter jets from the event could be heard around New Jersey as the US Navy welcomed the third naval ship named after the state.

The event was attended by nearly 4,000 people, including veterans, sailors' family members and naval officials.

The USS New Jersey, which displaces 7,000 tons and is more than 106 meters long, is the first Virginia-class submarine specifically designed for a mixed crew, according to the US Department of Defense .

The US Navy lifted the ban on women working on submarines in 2010 and more than 700 women are currently assigned to submarine positions, according to US Navy records.

Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher, commander of Submarine Force Atlantic, said the submarine community is now a gender-inclusive fighting force, according to Stars and Stripes . Gaucher added that in the future, all future nuclear-powered attack submarines and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines will also be designed with gender-neutral amenities from the start.

According to the Navy Times in 2023, the US Navy announced plans to increase the number of submarines with mixed crews from 30 to 40.

Lieutenant Commanders Andrea Howard and Emma McCarthy, among a growing number of women joining the submarine fleet, wrote in an October 2023 article for the US Naval Institute about the adjustments needed to help women integrate into submarines that were initially designed for all-male crews.
