Journey of gratitude on every inch of homeland
During the wars of national liberation and defense, Quang Nam province and Da Nang city (old), now Da Nang city (new) were the sites of many large and small battles, suffering many sacrifices and losses.
From 2021 to present, Da Nang (old) has organized 14 surveys and searches with more than 450 working days, collected 34 martyrs' remains, and handed them over to their families and localities for solemn and thoughtful funerals and burials.
In the old Quang Nam area, with the motto "not to let any martyr be forgotten", the Military Command coordinated with localities, veterans and relatives of martyrs to organize many surveys and searches in places that used to be fierce battlefields such as Bac Tra My, Nam Giang, Phuoc Son. From 2021 to June 2025, there were more than 700 surveys, collecting and processing nearly 2,500 information leads; excavating at 1,432 locations suspected of having martyrs' graves, gathering 119 remains, of which 38 martyrs were identified.
“The battles have been going on for a long time, veterans and people have been providing less and less information about martyrs due to old age, memory loss, and many changes in the original burial site, so the accuracy is low.

In addition, the special feature of the Steering Committee 515 of Da Nang city (old) does not have a specialized team to search for and collect martyrs' remains, so the search campaigns not only face difficulties in terms of terrain, initial information, and discovery of relics to identify martyrs, but also have concurrent and continuously rotating staff, which significantly affects the work of monitoring, directing and closely urging in performing tasks.
Da Nang City is currently very large in area, so the work of searching for and collecting martyrs' remains continues to receive special attention, because this meaningful activity contributes to easing the pain of war, responding to the feelings and earnest wishes of relatives, families of martyrs and compatriots and soldiers nationwide," said Colonel Vo Van Tuan, Political Commissar of Da Nang Military Command.
Technology and teamwork - two breakthrough factors
Unlike the previous stage, the current collection work is supported by satellite maps, GPS positioning systems, thermal imaging technology and DNA tracing. The Da Nang Military Command has provided information and images, coordinated with the City Post Office and local authorities to build an electronic information portal on martyrs and martyrs' graves, provided information, databases, and maps of martyrs' grave locations; martyrs' cemeteries are digitized and managed by a software system.
Thereby facilitating the management and comparison of location and grave information between the investigation database and actual images at martyr cemeteries; creating conditions for martyrs' relatives and people to access information about martyrs, martyrs' graves as well as martyr cemeteries quickly and accurately.
Major - professional soldier Do Van Toan, staff of the Training Department, General Staff Department, Da Nang City Military Command, is an experienced cartographer, directly participating in surveys and mapping of martyrs' graves.
Having just finished a survey trip, sweating profusely due to the hot summer weather of July, Major Do Van Toan's eyes were still full of enthusiasm. He confided that each trip was difficult but for him it was a sense of gratitude, a reminder for the younger generation growing up in peace, without having to hear the sound of bombs falling and bullets exploding, to have the opportunity to appreciate history and the sacrifice of his father.

Besides applying technology, raising awareness and responsibility, mobilizing all classes of people to participate in providing information and searching, collecting and identifying martyrs' remains plays an important role in influencing the effectiveness and progress of collecting martyrs' graves.
Searching and collecting martyrs' remains by working groups is extremely difficult and arduous, as climbing passes, wading streams, and marching into deep forests and dangerous mountains is a common thing.
But with the hope of finding the remains of martyrs to bring them back to their motherland, with affection, responsibility, gratitude and appreciation for the previous generation, the city's armed forces continue to carry out searches with the motto "finish, find and collect martyrs' remains wherever they are found", "as long as there is information about martyrs and martyrs' graves, we will continue to organize searches and collect them".
The City Veterans Association launched the movement "Veterans provide information and look for comrades" to arouse the sacred comradeship and team spirit.
Along with the work of gathering martyrs' graves, the armed forces of the cities also organized activities such as "lighting candles in gratitude", "commemorating martyrs' deaths", providing medical examinations, giving gifts to Vietnamese heroic mothers and relatives of martyrs; educating union members and youths on traditions through the journey of "returning to the source"... July 27 is not only a day of remembrance, but also a journey connecting the past and the present.
The fragrant incense sticks and drops of sweat soaked into the ground during each digging and searching… are strong proof of the principle of “When drinking water, remember its source”.
The Da Nang Armed Forces determined that this is not only a duty and responsibility but also a command from the heart that urges officers and soldiers; so that each grave found is a consolation for many families, a continuation of "gratitude" from today's generation to show gratitude to the heroic sons of the nation.
The journey to bring you back to your motherland will continue, like a never-ending promise.
