German court: Apple Watch does not neutralize CO2, misleading advertising

The Frankfurt Regional Court ruled in favor of environmentalists, concluding that tech giant Apple misled consumers when it advertised the Apple Watch as a "CO2-neutral product."

On August 26, the Frankfurt Regional Court (Germany) ruled in favor of environmentalists, concluding that the technology giant Apple had misled consumers when it advertised the Apple Watch as a "CO2 neutral product."

The panel of judges stressed that this advertisement was baseless and violated competition law.

Previously, Apple advertised the watch device online as "our first CO2-neutral product," based on a project to plant eucalyptus trees in Paraguay to offset emissions.

However, the Frankfurt court said the lease for 75% of the project area was not guaranteed after 2029 and the company could not be sure of renewal.

The plaintiff, environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), hailed the case as a victory against "greenwashing."

“Storing CO2 in commercial eucalyptus plantations is limited to just a few years, which does not guarantee ecological integrity,” said Juergen Resch, head of DUH.

Apple has not yet commented and the ruling may be appealed./.
