Book club trend spreads among young people

Not only stopping at the habit of reading books individually, today many young people seek book clubs as a space to meet, share and nurture their passion for knowledge. From small cafes, community libraries to online groups, the book club movement is becoming a new cultural trend, contributing to arousing the spirit of reading and forming a community connected by knowledge.

If in the past, reading was often associated with the image of a quiet individual sitting next to a page, now that habit is being "collectivized" in public spaces. Instead of just reading alone, many young people join book clubs to share feelings, discuss ideas and expand social relationships. In Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang, it is not difficult to come across book activities at coffee shops, libraries or creative spaces. A book is chosen as the center, members read it at home first, then discuss it enthusiastically, each person brings their own perspective.

The book club movement is considered a bridge between books and readers in today's digital society.

The development of social networks is also an important lever to help the book club movement spread. Initially, many groups only operated online with the purpose of introducing and commenting on books. Then, the need to meet in person grew, leading to regular offline meetings. A typical example is the "Book Club Vietnam" community on Facebook with tens of thousands of members, regularly organizing discussions at coffee shops; or the "Bookworm Saigon" group with the motto "Read to understand, share to remember longer" attracting a large number of students to participate. Some community libraries also built book clubs specifically for teenagers to foster reading habits from an early age.

It can be said that the shift from online to offline reflects the dual needs of today's youth: both the desire to connect with knowledge and the desire to interact in real life. Quynh Chi (23 years old, Hanoi), a member of the Book and Action Club, shared: “Book club first of all creates motivation to read. If reading alone, many people easily give up or quickly forget the content. But when joining the club, having a 'book reading deadline' and the opportunity to exchange makes reading habits more regularly maintained.”

Not only does it motivate, book clubs also open up opportunities for multi-dimensional learning. A book, through the lens of many people, becomes richer and more meaningful: economics students can approach novels from a management perspective, while literature students analyze language and symbols. That multi-voice is the attractive factor, making many young people stick with it for a long time.

Book clubs also become a place to connect with the community. In modern life, it is not easy to find friends with similar interests. Thanks to book clubs, bookworms meet each other, turn personal passions into collective activities, thereby forming close relationships in real life.

It is noteworthy that youth book clubs are not limited to classic literature. Many groups choose diverse topics, from self-help books, philosophy, technology, career skills to monthly “reading challenges” such as: “September - read books about the environment” or “October - explore Japanese literature.” Thanks to that, the messages from the books are spread more closely and naturally.

Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang - Director of Copyright and Publishing of Tan Viet Books believes that the development of reading culture does not stop at traditional printed books but needs to be strongly expanded on digital platforms, especially towards young people. However, along with modernization, preserving the habit of reading printed books is still very necessary to maintain a cultural beauty.

In fact, the strong development of the book club movement in recent times is a vivid proof of that innovative spirit. Not only maintaining traditional reading habits, the clubs have also expanded their space online, contributing to creating a dynamic, diverse and cohesive reading community. Publishing experts say that book clubs are becoming a bridge between books and readers in the digital society, arousing the spirit of self-study, critical thinking and spreading the love of knowledge in the community.
