Thought it was good but turned out to be bad

Washing your face with hot water feels good, especially on cold mornings or after a tiring day at work.

However, this seemingly harmless habit of washing your face with hot water may be causing you to face the problem of rapid skin aging, according to Onlymyhealth (India).

Using hot water to wash your face not only affects your temporary feeling but also has a profound impact on your skin's health in the long term, according to Rohit Batra, a dermatologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi (India).

Is washing your face with hot water good for your skin?

What happens when you wash your face with hot water?

Our facial skin is different from the skin on other parts of our body. It is thinner and contains many small capillaries and pores.

While hot water may feel instantly relaxing, it can have a number of hidden side effects. When exposed to hot water, the capillaries under the skin's surface are easily damaged, leading to redness and blotchiness.

In addition, hot water also removes the natural oils from the skin. This oil layer plays an important role in moisturizing and protecting the skin from harmful environmental factors. When the oil layer is lost, the skin becomes dry, tight and more vulnerable.

In particular, when the skin is no longer protected by its natural oil layer, the process of collagen breakdown occurs more quickly. Collagen is an important protein that helps maintain the firmness and elasticity of the skin. Frequent exposure to hot water reduces the ability to produce collagen, leading to the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.

Another less-noticed but equally serious side effect is the weakening of the skin’s natural protective barrier. Hot water makes the skin more sensitive to environmental factors such as pollution, harsh weather, or even skin care products.

How to avoid premature aging

Aging is an inevitable part of life, but there are ways to slow down the process. Rohit Batra, a dermatologist, notes that the loss of collagen and elastin is the main cause of visible signs of aging. However, with some small changes to our daily routine, we can minimize the effects.

One of the most important measures is to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. UV rays destroy collagen and elastin, especially in areas of the skin that are frequently exposed, such as the face, neck, and hands. To protect your skin, you should use sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days, and cover your skin with a hat or clothing when outdoors.

Consuming too many carbohydrates can cause glycation. This process damages collagen, accelerating skin aging. To prevent this, reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your diet and instead focus on foods rich in lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber.

Collagen supplementation through diet is also essential. Collagen is not only found in skin care products but can also be provided from food. Bone broth, fish, chicken, green vegetables and fruits are sources of collagen.

In addition, staying hydrated plays an important role in maintaining youthful skin. Drinking at least 2 liters of water a day helps keep skin moisturized from within, preventing dryness and promoting a smooth, radiant appearance.
