The visit is aimed at discussing ways to avoid a new escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel that could lead to a full-blown conflict in the Middle East. The visit comes as Washington is trying to push for a ceasefire and hostage release between Israel and the Hamas Islamist movement in Gaza.
General Brown began his trip to Jordan, then he will travel to Egypt and Israel to listen to the views of the military leaders of the above countries. According to AFP, speaking shortly after arriving in Jordan, General Brown said he would do everything possible to prevent the escalation of tensions and avoid a larger conflict.
The administration of US President Joe Biden is trying to limit the fallout from the 11-month conflict in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and Israel.
The conflict in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas gunmen suddenly infiltrated Israeli territory, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages (according to Israeli statistics).
The conflict has displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million Palestinians, causing widespread famine and disease. At least 40,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes and attacks since October last year, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Authority.
