Vinh Long: Garbage piled up on the streets, markets, and parks

Currently, the domestic waste of thousands of households in Vinh Long province is not collected. In markets, residential areas, parks, etc., waste is transported by people and production facilities to pile up, giving off a foul smell, causing serious environmental pollution.

This is the latest development after An Hiep landfill ( Vinh Long province) temporarily stopped accepting garbage on July 23 to deal with environmental pollution there.

Pointing to the "mountain" of garbage in Ba Tri market, Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong (a vegetable and fruit vendor at the market) said that this "mountain of garbage" has been formed for over a week now, growing bigger every day, but no environmental force has been seen collecting and transporting it for treatment.

“All kinds of garbage are decomposing, giving off a foul smell. When it rains, water from the garbage piles in the market flows around, overflowing onto the vegetable stalls, making business sluggish,” Mrs. Huong lamented.

Some other traders in the market are also upset. According to them, through the press, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Long province committed to solving the environmental pollution at An Hiep landfill within 5 days, to bring waste from other places in the province here for re-treatment. However, until now, waste is still overflowing in the market and residential areas. Who knows when this situation will end?

Not only in the market, according to SGGP Newspaper's reporter on July 29, in Ba Tri and An Hiep communes and An Hoi, Son Dong and Phu Khuong wards (Vinh Long province), household waste is also transported by people to pile up along inter-commune roads and parks in the area.

For example, at Ba Tri town park, household waste is piled high, emitting a strong odor, making it impossible for people to exercise or have fun.

Garbage collection and transfer points in Son Dong ward, Vinh Long province are overloaded.

According to Ben Tre Urban Construction Joint Stock Company (the unit in charge of garbage collection in Vinh Long province), since An Hiep landfill temporarily stopped receiving garbage (July 23) until now, the total amount of garbage temporarily stored at 11 transfer stations and 13 collection points in the area has been more than 1,190 tons. Of these, 6 stations and 6 garbage collection points are overloaded.

Mr. Le Van Vu, General Director of Ben Tre Urban Construction Joint Stock Company, said that while An Hiep landfill has not yet received waste, the unit must increase the height of the waste collection points to 4m to continue bringing domestic waste from people and production facilities here.

“We have increased the spraying of deodorants and covered the areas with tarpaulins, but after a period of storage, at the transfer and collection points, the garbage is decomposing quickly, emitting a foul odor and countless flies. If this situation continues, the health of people living near the stations will be severely affected,” Mr. Vu worried.

At the gathering points, environmental workers temporarily spray disinfectant to reduce odors while waiting for An Hiep landfill to fix the environmental pollution problem.

Faced with the above situation, according to Mr. Vu, the unit has just continued to petition the People's Committee of Vinh Long province to promptly direct and take measures to quickly and completely handle the environmental pollution at An Hiep landfill, preventing waste from accumulating on a large scale.

In addition, the company also asked communes and wards to support finding more temporary garbage storage locations, because most garbage collection points are currently overloaded, with a high risk of disease outbreaks.

Current garbage collection points are not properly covered and are located in the open on main roads.

Mr. Vo Van Ngoan, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, said that on July 29, the work of overcoming shortcomings and solving environmental pollution at An Hiep landfill was basically completed. On July 30, local leaders will join the people to inspect the remediation work, and An Hiep landfill will receive and process waste again.

According to Mr. Vo Van Ngoan, solving the environmental pollution at An Hiep landfill is only a temporary solution. In the long term, to ensure stable waste treatment in the province without causing environmental pollution, the locality is speeding up the construction of the Ben Tre Waste-to-Energy Plant (Huu Dinh commune), invested by AMACCAO Group.

The factory investment implementation is in the site clearance stage for handover to the investor.

“Of the 14 households in the area of land clearance, 5 households agreed to receive compensation, the remaining 9 households disagreed, saying that the compensation price was low. Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province is working with the Land Fund Development Center, researching and recalculating the compensation level, and having a reasonable solution to speed up the project's progress,” said Mr. Vo Van Ngoan.

The stench around An Hiep landfill has reduced significantly.

Previously, as SGGP Newspaper reported, the stench and leachate from An Hiep landfill often spread and flowed into the surrounding area, causing environmental pollution and seriously affecting the health and daily life of hundreds of households.

Too frustrated, in mid-July 2025, many households set up checkpoints, preventing garbage trucks from entering the An Hiep landfill. This was the third time people organized to block garbage trucks, the previous two times were in July 2023 and July 2024.

On July 22, 2025, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province and related units held a dialogue with the people, pledging to fix the environmental pollution problem within 5 days.
