Identifying key solutions for digital transformation in Ho Chi Minh City education

On October 28, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City organized an international conference on the Ho Chi Minh City Education Sector with digital transformation of education, from core to comprehensive.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that the Department of Education and Training of the City identifies digital transformation as the top important solution in innovating leadership methods, a tool to create breakthroughs in administrative reform, improve the investment environment, and an important goal and driving force in improving the quality of education and training in the city. Digital transformation helps reduce pressure on both teachers and students, supporting better education management. Information and communication technology is currently widely applied in education management, including software for managing student and teacher databases; Online survey and test systems; Timetable software, etc.

“The city’s education sector has identified a number of key tasks and solutions, including training and fostering digital skills, raising awareness for cadres, teachers and employees in the entire sector. Implementing current regulations in performing digital transformation tasks; building and developing digital data. Focusing resources on investing in infrastructure to meet the requirements of applying information technology in management and teaching in all educational institutions...”, Dr. Hieu said.

Participating in the workshop via online connection, Mr. Cristóbal Cobo, senior education expert, key member of the global education technology team and Ms. Marie-Helene Cloutier, senior economist of the World Bank used the World Bank's education technology readiness index to analyze the policies and practices of the Ho Chi Minh City education ecosystem. Accordingly, from data collected through school surveys, the two experts analyzed the Ho Chi Minh City education ecosystem according to 6 pillars: school management, teachers, students, equipment, connectivity, digital resources. From there, the World Bank senior expert recommended that Ho Chi Minh City would be more successful if it planned, revised and improved the consistency and quality assurance of its education technology strategy, put teachers and students at the center, and prioritized the purchase, distribution and effective use of digital devices in schools.

Education technology strategies will also be effective if they build on the strengths of existing school management to support the planning, implementation and monitoring of education technology policies, as well as enhance the effective use of digital resources, improve the quality of internet connections in schools, pay special attention to lower levels of education, continue solutions to shorten the gap between urban and rural areas...
