Saltwater intrusion 'attacks' Ho Chi Minh City's estuary area

The Southern Hydrometeorological Station said: On January 20, the highest water level at stations on rivers and canals in the Ho Chi Minh City area rose rapidly until mid-week, with Nha Be station appearing at the beginning of the week. The highest tide peak is forecast to be approximately 0.05m below or below alert level 3. High tides in the dry season are associated with saltwater intrusion.

Currently in the dry season, the amount of water from the upstream of the rivers is low, so seawater follows the river mouths deep inland, causing saltwater intrusion.

The highest salinity at most stations appears in the middle of the week, except for Nha Be station, which appears at the beginning of the week; at a higher level than the same period in 2023 and the average of many years. The 4% 0 salinity boundary penetrates the deepest on the Saigon River, about 65 - 70 km. Next week, on the Saigon River, the 4% 0 salinity boundary penetrates about 68 - 73 km.

"The risk of natural disasters due to saltwater intrusion on rivers in the Ho Chi Minh City area is at level 3. Saltwater intrusion deep into rivers, canals and streams in the Ho Chi Minh City area affects people's lives, activities and production," the bulletin warned of the impact of saltwater intrusion.

Forecast of saltwater intrusion in Ho Chi Minh City

Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station

MSc. Le Thi Xuan Lan, a hydrometeorological expert, said: This year, saltwater intrusion came early and increased rapidly because of the preparation for the high tide in early December. In addition, the strong northeast monsoon in the East Sea pushed seawater deep into the rivers. Currently, localities such as Can Gio, Nha Be, and Cat Lai are affected. The impact is likely to be deeper and more severe during the upcoming high tides. By the beginning of the second lunar month, saltwater intrusion may affect the Thu Duc water plant area.

Regarding the activity of the northeast monsoon, the Southern Hydrometeorological Station said: In the sea area from Ba Ria - Vung Tau to Ca Mau, the northeast monsoon will gradually increase in intensity and at level 5 - 6, gusting to level 6, sometimes level 7; waves from 1.5 - 2.2m high; seas are slightly to rough. Natural disaster risk is at level 2.
