Google is being asked to permanently demonetize channels that broadcast climate misinformation.

On October 24, thousands of people signed a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai calling on the company to strictly implement a policy of eliminating false environmental information that causes misunderstanding about climate change.

The open letter comes after major storms in the US, which have sparked a spate of misinformation, and just weeks before the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

In 2021, Google introduced a policy banning ads that deny the existence or causes of climate change. This policy is intended to prevent monetization based on misinformation.

However, in the letter, the petitioners said that this advertising activity has not stopped, so Google needs to implement a radical and immediate policy to ensure that the company's policies are trustworthy and the community needs to clearly understand the impact of climate change.

They also asked Google to immediately and permanently demonetize other channels that spread climate misinformation.

The letter also mentioned the series of environmental misinformation after the recent superstorms that hit the US, hindering relief efforts.

Recently, many individuals and organizations have been identified as having profited from the above advertising activities.

Ad exchanges have helped three websites including The Epoch Times profit from climate change denial, according to a report by Check My Ads.

Meanwhile, the organization Global Witness estimates that last year, this advertising activity helped The Epoch Times generate $1.5 million in revenue for Google and other website owners.
