(GLO)- The incident of 3 students of Quang Trung High School drowning to death at Hon Co Lake (Song An Commune, An Khe Town, Gia Lai Province) occurred on June 8, leaving behind grief for relatives and friends. Through this incident, the local government and the school continue to promote propaganda to raise awareness among people and parents to minimize injuries and drowning accidents that cause death in children.
The pain of those left behind
Three students from Quang Trung High School drowned, including: Ha Xuan Truong (born 2004, class 12A9; residing in group 3, An Tan ward); Tran Van Hoang (born 2006, class 11A4) and Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (born 2005, class 12A9), both residing in Thuong An 3 village (Song An commune). The initial cause was determined to be that the students went to play at the dam bank, slipped and fell into the water, leading to their deaths.

Before that, at around 2pm on June 8, the children asked their parents to go out. By 5pm the same day, the family had not been able to contact them and had organized an all-night search but had not found any information about them.
At 5:00 a.m. on June 9, families organized a search in the Hon Co lake area (in An Thuong 1 village, Song An commune) and discovered 2 motorbikes and the children's belongings on the shore. After that, the bodies of Hoang and Truong floated to the surface of the water. Their families and relatives brought the bodies of the 2 children to shore and informed the local authorities. The An Khe Fire Fighting and Rescue Team under the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department (Gia Lai Provincial Police) came to the scene to search for Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc. At about 8:00 a.m. on the same day, the police pulled Truc up and coordinated with the local authorities and the family to complete the relevant procedures for the 3 families to bring the children's bodies home for funeral arrangements.
Looking at the portrait of her younger brother Ha Xuan Truong in a daze, Ms. Ha Thi Xuan Phuong (Group 3, An Tan Ward) choked up and shared: “My family has 3 siblings: I am the oldest, Truong is the second and the youngest brother. I am about to graduate from Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Truong is about to take the high school graduation exam, the sisters often call each other to encourage each other to try hard in studying. Truong shared that he had registered his wish to study Graphic Design atFPT Polytechnic College in Ho Chi Minh City. Preparing to welcome my younger brother to study in Saigon and for my sister to live with me, I rented a house in District 12 (Ho Chi Minh City). I did not expect Truong to leave me, my relatives to leave forever.”

In Thuong An 3 village (Song An commune), the atmosphere of mourning covered the peaceful countryside. The sound of crying mixed with the sound of drums and trumpets made everyone feel sad and sorry. Mr. Duong Thanh Ngo - Party cell secretary and head of Thuong An 3 village said: Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc and Tran Van Hoang are her aunt's and uncle's children; their houses are 500m apart. Both sisters are the youngest children in the family; they are obedient and know how to help their parents with housework and farming. Both parents are farmers and work for hire to raise their children. "When hearing the news that the two children drowned, everyone in the village was shocked and saddened. The Party cell, the village committee, and the people came to visit and encourage the family; they are always on duty with the two families to take care of the funeral for the children" - Mr. Ngo said emotionally.
In a small house filled with incense smoke, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong - father of Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, with red eyes and a haggard face, struggled to prepare for the funeral of his youngest daughter. According to Mr. Phuong, Truc has 3 older sisters who all go to school and work far away. At this time, Truc is focusing on studying and reviewing for the upcoming high school graduation exam. At about 1:30 p.m. on June 8, Mr. Phuong called Truc to wake up to go to school. After 5 p.m., he and his wife still hadn't seen their daughter return, so they called Truc but she didn't answer. After waiting for a long time but still didn't see Truc return, the family went out to look for her but there was no sign of her. “Early morning on June 9, some relatives went to Hon Co lake area in Thuong An 1 village to search and found 2 motorbikes parked on the lake shore, next to 2 pairs of sandals, Truc’s handbag hanging on the motorbike but no one was found. In 14 years, the river god took away my 2 beloved daughters” - Mr. Phuong sobbed.
Along with his classmates in class 11A4, Quang Trung High School, coming to burn incense to bid farewell to his close friend, Than Trung Kien (Thuong An 3 village, Song An commune) sadly shared: “Our houses are nearly 400 meters apart, Hoang often came to invite me to go to school. In class, we also sat close to each other. Hoang was a good boy and rarely went out, so when I heard the news of his death by drowning, I couldn't believe it was true.”

Mr. Dao Duy Luc - Principal of Quang Trung High School said: On May 27, the school organized a summary of the 2022-2023 school year. Grade 10 and 11 students are on summer vacation, the school handed over to their families and local authorities for management. Grade 12 students continue to review their knowledge, preparing for the high school graduation exam. Study time is from Monday to Friday in the morning; in the afternoon and evening, students study by themselves. During this time, the school still arranges homeroom and flag-saluting periods; integrates propaganda and education for students on drowning prevention and accident prevention.
“The unfortunate drowning of 3 students is very unfortunate. The school board, union, youth union, homeroom teachers, subject teachers and many students came to pay their respects and express their condolences to the family. The school has allocated a portion of the budget and called on benefactors to support each family with 2 million VND to pay for the funeral of the students. In the coming time, the school will continue to strictly implement the directives of the Department of Education and Training and the locality on disseminating skills to prevent injuries and drowning for students. Parents should pay more attention to their children to avoid unfortunate risks from happening,” added Mr. Luc.
Strengthening propaganda
Hon Co Lake in Thuong An 1 village, Song An commune has a water surface area of nearly 50,000 m2. Hon Co Lake area is located in the eco-tourism development planning of An Khe town. Every year, the lake not only provides irrigation water for dozens of hectares of rice and crops of the people but is also an ideal destination for many families and young people to organize camping and picnic trips with relatives and friends.

Mr. Khuu Doan Huan - Chairman of Song An Commune People's Committee said: "Hon Co Lake has a large area and deep water. In recent years, along with the direction of villages and hamlets to propagate people not to bathe or swim, the commune has put up warning signs at the lake. 3 students invited each other to the lake to play, initially determined that they slipped and fell into the water, leading to drowning. The People's Committee of the commune and the commune's mass organizations came to express their condolences and encourage the families. The commune also immediately reported the incident to superiors."
Upon receiving the heartbreaking news in the area, on the morning of June 9, the Standing Committee of An Khe Town Party Committee issued an urgent dispatch directing Party committees at all levels, localities, agencies, units, especially schools in the area to strengthen the implementation of measures to prevent injuries and drowning of children in the town.
According to Secretary of An Khe Town Party Committee Nguyen Xuan Phuoc, in recent times, the town’s Party Committee and authorities have proactively directed the implementation of measures to strengthen the prevention of accidents, injuries and drowning of children; localities, agencies and units have actively paid attention to advising, directing and seriously implementing this work. However, on June 8, a tragic drowning incident occurred in the town, killing 3 students.
“In order to minimize the number of accidents, injuries, and drownings that cause death to children, and to create a safe and healthy living environment for children, especially during the summer vacation; the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee requests that Party committees at all levels, localities, agencies, and units, according to their assigned functions and tasks, proactively and promptly implement the contents of the Official Dispatch “On strengthening the prevention of accidents, injuries, and drownings of children in the town” - Mr. Phuoc emphasized.
