The meeting was expected to produce a document on the Middle East conflict, plans for a common currency and preliminary talks on expanding BRICS membership. However, the meeting is said to have ended in a stalemate, the South China Morning Post reported.
Accordingly, Indian and Brazilian diplomats set a condition for the expansion of BRICS that the new members must support the idea of the two countries and South Africa being admitted as permanent members of the UN Security Council. Egypt and Ethiopia refused to sign a joint statement on this issue, due to a lack of consensus on the selection of a country to represent Africa in the Security Council.
