Severe medical oxygen shortages have been a problem for decades in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with less than 50% of health facilities having continuous access to medical oxygen.

Faced with this situation, the Global Oxygen Alliance (GO2AL), comprising about 20 leading organizations in the world, calls on country leaders to prioritize access to medical oxygen in strategies, policies and finance.
The call comes ahead of three high-level UN meetings on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, universal health coverage and tuberculosis from September 20 to 22.
Access to a reliable, sustainable supply of medical oxygen is critical to achieving the health-related targets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and is critical to responding to future health threats, said Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund.
