From the job of teaching, Loi Hai Vi Dinh got a bachelor's degree in literature from Beijing University in the prestigious national exam, becoming a teacher does not require a university degree.

While academic achievements and degrees from prestigious universities are often highly valued by society, Lei Haiwei's story is an inspiring testament that passion, perseverance and self-learning can overcome traditional prejudices.

Humble Beginnings

Born in 1981 in Dongkou district, Hunan province (southern China), Lei Hai Wei's childhood was associated with simplicity and hardship, according to Sohu.

Although his family was not well off, his father - one of the few educated people in the village - passed on to him and his sister a love of classical Chinese poetry.

Although he did not fully understand the meaning of the poems he memorized as a child, the boy Loi was captivated by the rhythmic beauty of each word.

Despite his passion for poetry, Lei's academic journey was not very remarkable. He struggled in most subjects except Chinese literature and ended up studying electricity at a technical secondary school.

After graduating, Lei Haiwei moved to Shanghai in hopes of finding better opportunities. However, his career did not go smoothly.

From construction worker to waiter, car washer or salesman, he changed through many positions but none of them brought stability.

Take advantage of any time, any place to write poetry

Despite his lack of direction in his work, Loi's passion for poetry never faded. He spent his limited time at bookstores or on the sidewalks, engrossed in poetry books and memorizing every line.

Those quiet moments gradually laid the foundation for his profound understanding of classical Chinese poetry.

In 2015, Lei Haiwei moved to Hangzhou and joined the booming food delivery industry there. Despite the hard work and financial pressure, he continued to nurture his love for poetry.

While his colleagues entertain themselves by watching livestreams or playing games on their phones, Loi takes advantage of every free moment, such as when waiting for orders or standing at traffic lights, to recite poetry.

The Life-Changing Contest

The big turning point in Lei Haiwei's life came from the famous TV show "Chinese Poetry Discussion". When the second season aired in 2017, Lei eagerly signed up to participate but received no response from the organizers.

Undeterred, he continued to register for the third season and faced silence again. It was not until the end of 2017 that Loi received a call inviting him to participate in the live selection round, and he even wore his usual shipper outfit to participate in the competition.

Among 100,000 candidates nationwide, Lei Hai Wei's outstanding memory and deep understanding of poetry helped him enter the top 100.

In the final episode aired in November 2018, Lei Haiwei faced off against “school genius” Peng Min – a literature master from Peking University and former champion of a Chinese idiom contest. Despite their obvious educational background, the shipper won with his quick wit and poetic talent.

When the host announced the results, the entire audience burst into applause. Lei Haiwei remained calm as usual, just smiled and said: " Although it is difficult to filter through each grain of sand, the gold will eventually be revealed when the sand and dust are swept away."

His life story has inspired millions of Chinese people. After his victory, Lei received many invitations to participate in cultural events or give speeches.

An academy offered Lei a full-time job as a classical poetry teacher, even though he had no college degree. The young man quit his delivery job and pursued his new career.

As a poetry teacher, Loi Hai Vi has conveyed her dedication and enthusiasm, sharing her love for classical literature with her students, encouraging young people to seek beauty and meaning through each poem.
