Experts recommend grading method for blurred math exam questions

Mr. Tran Manh Tung, a math teacher in Hanoi, frankly commented that the first mistake that led to the mistake in the math exam questions for grade 10 in Hanoi was due to the candidates. If the students read the exam carefully, they would see that the numerator and denominator must be in the middle of the horizontal mark, but they did not observe the exam carefully and made the mistake.

The second error is the part of the exam printing department. Normally, for the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi, the exam is organized to be printed in groups of 5-10 schools in the area. According to the regulations, after printing the sample, the person in charge must check it once to avoid errors, before pressing the print button.

If this question is omitted, it means that 2 points will be removed from the total score for the 10th grade entrance exam this year (Math score multiplied by 2). Meanwhile, just a difference of half a point can determine whether a candidate passes or fails, so it is understandable that candidates and parents are upset.

"To avoid disadvantages for candidates, the Department of Education and Training should organize marking according to two options, both plus and minus signs. Candidates who give correct answers will still be marked as usual. No matter what question it is, the candidate's ability will still be assessed," said Mr. Tung.

With 10 years of experience teaching at the high school level and preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam, Mr. Tran Duc Hien (a teacher in an education system in Hanoi) said that the fact that some of the math exam questions for the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi yesterday were blurred was a rare and unfortunate incident.

"The responsibility for the above error lies with the Department of Education and Training, the Exam Council and the printing work. Fortunately, the blurred printed exam only happened at some testing sites, some candidates, and the coverage was not large. Thanks to that, handling the crisis was also easier for the Hanoi Department of Education and Training," said Mr. Hien.

This expert recommended that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training quickly determine the cause and propose a solution to avoid affecting the rights of candidates. If the exam questions are printed blurry, causing candidates to misunderstand that it is a minus sign, then it is possible to create an additional part of the answer to that question. Candidates who think it is a minus sign and calculate the result correctly can be completely awarded points. However, it is very difficult for the Department of Education and Training and the exam sites to accurately determine which candidates misunderstand the questions.

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Viet Tien, a Math teacher at Xuan Son Secondary School, Son Tay Town, Hanoi, said that in part 1, the 3 dashes of the fraction were blurred, causing confusion as the minus sign "-" and the above incident happened in some examination councils, not the whole city.

To ensure the rights of candidates, the Department of Education and Training needs to quickly verify and come up with the best solution. “In case a candidate cannot do the test, no points will be given or points will be given to the extent of the correctness. If a candidate does the test according to a misunderstood question but is correct, full points should still be given to that test. The Department of Education and Training needs to have the most reasonable solution for students, because this is a very fierce test that is of interest to candidates, parents and society,” Mr. Tien suggested.

On the evening of June 11, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that they had received information that the math questions in the 10th grade entrance exam at some testing sites had blurred marks, causing many candidates to mistake them for minus signs. The Department of Education and Training is verifying and clarifying the above information.

"After specific verification, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will have a handling plan in accordance with regulations, in the spirit of ensuring maximum rights and fairness for candidates," said the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

Previously, right after candidates completed the Math exam - the final exam for admission to public 10th grade yesterday afternoon (June 11), many parents and candidates were upset and complained that the 10th grade Math exam was blurred and printed with poor quality, causing students to misread the questions and lose points.

In question 3, point 1 requires candidates to solve the equation. Because the ink is not clear, the dash is broken, causing students to mistakenly see it as -2. Some test sites reported to have the above phenomenon are Tran Dang Ninh Secondary School, Nguyen Van Cu High School, Yen Thuong Secondary School, Duong Xa High School, Dan Phuong High School, Quang Trung - Dong Da High School.

The test paper had a blurred cross-out, causing candidates to mistake it for a minus sign (left) and a standard test (right). The information was quickly shared on many educational forums. This morning (June 12), many parents came to the Department of Education and Training to complain about the incident.
