Picasso's son dies at age 76

Information about the passing of Mr. Claude Ruiz Picasso - son of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and French artist Françoise Gilot - was confirmed to the media recently by the family's lawyer.

The lawyer said Mr. Claude died in Switzerland, but did not disclose the cause of his death. Mr. Claude leaves behind a wife and two children.

During his lifetime, he was a photographer and film director. He was also responsible for managing the estate left by his father, the famous painter Picasso, from 1989 until July this year.

In July, Mr. Claude handed over this management responsibility to his sister - Mrs. Paloma Picasso (74 years old).

Picasso had four children. Claude and his sister Paloma were the children of Picasso and the French artist Françoise Gilot. Gilot died in June this year at the age of 101.

Picasso's eldest son, Paulo Picasso, was born from his marriage to ballerina Olga Khokhlova. Paulo died in 1975.

Picasso's second daughter, Maya Widmaier-Picasso, was born from a relationship between the artist and French model Marie-Therese Walter. Maya passed away in 2022.

The famous painter Picasso once cut off all contact with his two children, Claude and Paloma, after their biological mother, the painter Françoise Gilot, initiated a divorce with the famous painter.

Mrs. Gilot was the first and only woman in Picasso's life who took the initiative to leave him, which was a huge psychological shock to the famous artist.

In 1970, at the age of 22, Claude filed a lawsuit in a French court to be recognized as Picasso's legitimate son. When recognized as Picasso's legitimate son, Claude also had the right to inherit.

The lawsuit helped Claude and his sister Paloma re-establish their status as the legal heirs to Picasso's estate, a move they did before Picasso died at the age of 91 in 1973.

To this day, the fortune that Picasso left behind is still one of the most valuable in the world of painting. When Picasso passed away, he left behind more than 45,000 works, including 1,885 paintings, 1,228 sculptures, 7,089 sketches, about 30,000 prints, 150 sketchbooks, 3,222 ceramic works...

Picasso also left behind millions of dollars in cash. At the time of his death, his estate was estimated to be worth more than $815 million.

Because Picasso did not leave a will, it took six years for the division of his estate to be agreed upon between the parties involved. The process of dividing the estate caused great disagreement and division among family members.

Eventually, an agreement was reached that Picasso's works would be divided between his surviving children, Claude, Paloma and Maya. The two surviving children of his eldest son, Paulo Picasso (who had died at the time), would also inherit.

By 1989, Mr. Claude was the official person in charge of managing the assets left by the famous artist Picasso, including managing copyright issues, taking legal actions to combat the appearance of fake works or wrongful actions that affect the legacy that Picasso left behind.

However, there are often disagreements within Picasso's family about how to use the late artist's name in future commercial contracts.

For example, in 1999, Mr. Claude agreed to let a car company use Picasso's name and signature to launch a car line named after the famous artist.

At this time, a niece of Picasso named Marina spoke out to criticize Mr. Claude, because she thought this decision to cooperate was disrespectful to the late artist.

Ms. Marina believes that the name of the famous painter Picasso should not be used to name a car line that is so industrial, stereotypical and... tasteless.
