Researchers at the Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi (UAE) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can recognize and copy people's handwriting, then generate text with identical handwriting.
Called AI HWT, the tool can generate realistic fake text with just a few snippets of anyone's handwriting.
The goal of the tool is to help people who are injured or have problems that prevent them from holding a pen to write. The system will then help create handwritten documents that look exactly like their handwriting.
In addition, the AI HWT tool also helps users write long paragraphs of text in their handwriting without having to bother holding a pen. It also helps "decode" the handwriting of doctors, which is notoriously "difficult to read".

Besides the positive side, the AI HWT tool has made many people worried because it can be exploited to create fake or counterfeit documents to forge signatures on contracts.
Even the authors at MBZUAI admit that they are concerned that their AI tool could be misused, so the team has been very cautious when researching this tool.
"Handwriting represents a person's identity, so we are thinking carefully before deploying this tool to the community," the New York Post quoted a representative of the research team as saying.
The fear that the AI HWT tool could be used for malicious purposes is completely grounded because users have witnessed the "dark side" of AI.
Many photo and video editing tools integrate AI, allowing the creation of fake images or videos easily...
Many AI tools can even mimic another person's voice from just a short recording, allowing bad guys to take advantage of it to make fraudulent phone calls.
To prevent the possibility of the AI HWT tool “doing something harmful,” the research team aims to raise public awareness and develop tools to prevent handwriting forgery. “This is like developing a tool to protect against computer viruses,” the research team emphasized.
The HWT AI tool currently only supports English and French. Researchers are continuing to work on making it support more complex languages.
