Honda partners with Astrobotic to deploy renewable battery system on the Moon

Honda's system — which produces oxygen, hydrogen and electricity from solar energy and water — will be integrated with Astrobotic's solar power system to maintain light throughout the long lunar night.

Honda Motor Company's US branch has just signed a cooperation agreement with the US space technology company Astrobotic Technology to test a renewable fuel cell system on the surface of the Moon.

This is seen as an important step towards the goal of supporting a long-term human presence on Earth's natural satellite.

Under the deal, Honda's system - capable of producing oxygen, hydrogen and electricity from solar energy and water - will be integrated with Astrobotic's solar power system.

This structure helps maintain a continuous power source during the lunar night for up to 14 days, when sunlight is no longer present.

Honda's technology allows solar energy to be stored as hydrogen during the day and converted back into electricity at night, creating water as the only by-product - which can be reused in a closed cycle.

Bobby Rolley, lunar power system architect at Astrobotic, said this was a “huge step forward” in extending the operating time on the Moon from a few days to many years.

Meanwhile, Mr. Derek Adelman, chief engineer of the Space Development Division of American Honda Motor, said that this cooperation "marks a turning point in developing a scalable energy solution for long-duration missions on the lunar surface."

Astrobotic - founded in 2007 in Pittsburgh - is currently responsible for two lunar missions and developing a variety of space exploration technologies.

For its part, Honda has established a Space Development Division in the US since late 2024, aiming to expand research in the field of space technology./.
