'Finally got her'

Overcoming family concerns and social prejudice, a Thanh Hoa man decided to marry a girl in a wheelchair.

10 days have passed, Bui Thi Hai Yen (from Ha Tinh ) still holds the same choked emotions from the day she put on her pure white wedding dress.

For a girl like Yen who cannot stand on her own two feet, a hundred years of happiness used to be something far away. But when she met Vi Van Duy (from Thanh Hoa), a healthy, whole-hearted man with a heart full of love, she believed that there is always a suitable match for anyone in this life.

The couple got married after more than a year of dating.

Yen was born with weaker legs than normal. In order to stand up straight, she had to hold on to something solid.

Yen herself soon realized that she was less fortunate than her friends, but she always thought positively: "Luckily, I was born with this trait, so I can adapt more easily." With the love and help of relatives and friends, Yen's growing up years passed peacefully.

“But I still have times when I feel inferior. I can’t go, it’s so sad,” Yen said.

In 2023, while working in Hanoi , Yen had the opportunity to meet Vi Van Duy - the destination of her life.

They met each other when they live-streamed to make friends on social media. The first time they communicated online, they found each other compatible. Yen found Duy handsome and cute, while Duy found Yen talkative and smart.

They have a happy and meaningful day

Through text messages and video calls, they became closer. Even though they had never met, they confessed their feelings. But until then, Duy still did not know the truth about Yen's legs.

“I only knew her face through the phone screen. Then one day, 4 months later, a friend told me that Yen could not walk normally. I still acted normal, but when Yen found out, she asked to break up,” Duy said.

“I told him, ‘Now that I’m like this, let’s just… forget it.’ No one wants to love or marry someone in a wheelchair. I took the initiative to break up so he wouldn’t feel awkward,” Yen said.

Duy disagreed. For him, it didn’t matter whether the girl walked on her own or in a wheelchair. What mattered to him was her personality and compatibility.

Duy, who was working in Hai Duong at the time, took a bus to Hanoi to meet Yen. She waited at the bus station very early to pick him up. They met for the first time but felt close and familiar as if they had been together for a long time.

After a while, Duy invited Yen to live with him in Hai Duong. Because of love, she decided to leave Hanoi to work online in Hai Duong so that she could eat his cooking and receive his attentive care and attention.

The whole wedding was emotional

The day Duy’s parents found out that their son was in love with a girl in a wheelchair, they were worried and anxious. They did not strictly forbid him, but they strongly advised him to reconsider because marrying a disabled girl was “choosing a difficult situation for himself”.

Duy came from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh to take her home.

Duy was determined, “I will marry the person I love.” He ignored the gossip from outside. To him, no one can make him happy or miserable for him, so he must decide his own life.

Only when he was sure there were no more obstacles did Duy take Yen home to meet his family. She was welcomed by his family with openness and love.

But when Yen came home to meet her family, the couple was forbidden. Yen's mother did not dare believe that someone would truly love her daughter. She told Duy: "I can only adopt you as a daughter, but as a son-in-law... no. With Yen like this, how can you two get married?"

During his days in Ha Tinh, Duy only cared for Yen as usual and that “normality” moved Yen’s parents. They agreed to matchmake the young couple.

The bride and groom perform the foot washing ceremony and receive gifts on their wedding day.

On March 19, the couple officially got married and moved in together. The bride wore a gorgeous white dress and sat in a wheelchair waiting for the groom to come and take her home.

The groom led a procession of about 20 people from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh to pick up his wife. The moment the bride and groom entered the wedding hall in a wheelchair, the whole wedding hall was filled with emotion. Many people shed tears of joy for the couple's happiness.

“Finally I got to bring her home, I'm so happy,” Duy said.

Yen was moved by her mother's advice: "Now that you two are a couple, you must love each other and work together to build happiness."

As for Anh Duy, the man who has now become her husband and the father of the child she is carrying, Yen wants to say thank you: "Thank you for coming, staying and loving me."
