Da Nang proactively prevents fire and drowning

(Chinhphu.vn) - In response to warnings about extreme weather, fire and drowning risks in the summer, Da Nang City is implementing a series of practical and synchronous solutions: From popularizing swimming skills for students to increasing inspection of electrical systems, consolidating on-site fire fighting models...

With the increasingly complex developments of climate change, extreme weather is becoming a constant threat. Prolonged heat waves not only increase the risk of fire but also pose the risk of drowning when swimming in rivers and seas, especially for children as summer approaches.

Not standing aside from the warning, Da Nang City has proactively and synchronously deployed many practical solutions in fire prevention, fire fighting (PCCC), rescue (CNCH) and drowning prevention. With the motto "prevention is key", activities are carried out methodically and comprehensively, to protect people's safety during the hot season.

Many free swimming classes help students prevent drowning this summer.

Statistics show that from 2021 to now, Da Nang City has recorded more than 100 drowning incidents, taking the lives of 53 people, mainly children and students in sea, lake and stream areas without warning or control. The death of two students at Nam O beach in early May continues to be a painful warning about accident prevention skills of people, especially children.

This summer, Da Nang City has launched many free swimming classes at schools and children's centers, aiming to equip students with swimming skills and prevent drowning - one of the high risks for children during the summer vacation.

At Nui Thanh Primary School, for the past 3 weeks, the swimming class atmosphere has been bustling every day. Students are instructed in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke techniques, and skills to handle situations in the water.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trung, physical education teacher at Nui Thanh Primary School, said that this summer, the school has about 480 students participating in free swimming classes. With the guidance of 4 coaches with swimming teaching certificates, the class organizes 7 rotating sessions each day. "In addition to basic swimming techniques, students are also taught soft skills to respond and support others in case of drowning accidents. This is a very practical program, contributing to ensuring safety for students in the summer," Mr. Trung shared.

Not only schools, Da Nang Children's Palace also organizes many free swimming classes for children, especially those in difficult circumstances.

Mr. Nguyen Nhan, Director of the Da Nang Children's Palace, said that the unit is currently organizing swimming courses for about 500 children. "The dissemination of swimming skills is very necessary, especially for children who have not had access to a safe swimming environment. We coordinate with all sectors and levels to strongly implement this activity every summer," Mr. Nhan said.

Fighting "fire" in hot season

According to statistics, in the period 2021-2025, the whole city of Da Nang recorded 844 fires, accounting for 67.1% of the total number of fires and fire incidents in the area. Typical incidents such as the fire of 3 fishing boats at Tho Quang fishing port (February 2021), forest fire in Hoa Nhon (May 2021), fire at a warehouse cluster in Lien Chieu district (July 2022), and recently the fire at Muong Thanh apartment building (May 2025) all caused great damage to property, some of which killed people.

To proactively raise the spirit of fire prevention and drowning prevention as summer approaches, Da Nang City Police organized a conference to deploy measures to ensure fire safety, search and rescue, and drowning prevention during the hot season of 2025.

Accordingly, each department, agency, and sector is assigned specific tasks. The Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism promotes communication at markets, schools, and public places; the Department of Industry and Trade and Electricity strengthen inspections of household and production electricity systems; the Department of Construction proposes to add fire hydrants in small alleys; the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Forestry Department, and the Da Nang City Police tighten control of forest fires at tourist destinations such as Ba Na Hills, Linh Ung Pagoda, etc.

In particular, Da Nang City is one of the first localities in the country to implement a peak period of fire safety inspections in residential areas, establishing and maintaining 702 "Fire Safety Inter-family Teams", 2,530 "public fire fighting points", and nearly 700 "initial fire fighting points". These are models that promote the role of local people, both monitoring and proactively fighting fires initially, reducing waiting time for professional forces.

In rescue work, the City Fire Prevention and Rescue Police have received and handled more than 4,500 reports in 5 years, mobilizing 18,000 officers and more than 3,000 vehicles. The effectiveness of regular on-call duty has contributed significantly to protecting the lives and property of residents and tourists.
