On August 22, the Danish Ministry of Education announced that from 2026, students at some high schools in the country will be allowed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to prepare for English exams.

The decision comes as education ministries around the world debate whether AI is a useful learning tool in today's digital age, or a factor that degrades the quality of future generations of students.

The Danish government said the use of AI in English exams will be piloted and only apply to the oral part of the high school graduation exam.

Accordingly, after receiving the exam, students will have 60 minutes to prepare and be allowed to use all available tools, including AI generators. Students will then take the exam in front of the examiner.

For the written test, students will have to write part of it by hand to ensure they are not too dependent on technology. In previous years, the written test was done entirely on a computer with an internet connection.

The AI pilot will only apply to high schools that volunteer to participate. Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye said in a statement that the ministry is launching the AI pilot to “find the right balance” between encouraging digitalization of learning and teaching and maintaining the quality of education.

In other countries in Europe, high school students are required to take handwritten exams rather than typed ones.

Denmark has allowed students to use the Internet in exams since 2008.
