US Visa Renewal: Important Notice for International Students from September 2

The US Department of State has just issued an important announcement on the non-immigrant visa extension policy, officially effective from September 2.

According to the announcement, most visa renewal applicants, including common visa types such as F, M, J, applicants under 14 years old and over 79 years old, must attend an in-person interview at the US Consulate/Embassy.

The new rule is a significant change from the current policy, which allows many cases to renew their visas by mail without re-interviewing.

According to study abroad experts, at this time, international students should take advantage of this opportunity to renew their visas as soon as possible if they are in Vietnam or are about to return to Vietnam. Those who plan to renew their visas after September 2 should carefully consider their plans to leave the US to avoid unwanted problems.

In addition, international students need to maintain a GPA above 3.0 to ensure a smoother visa renewal process.

Parents and students interested in study abroad programs and joint programs with American universities

The notice specifies a number of exceptions exempted from interviews, including visa symbols such as: A-1, A-2, C-3 (except for servants, domestic workers or personal employees of accredited officials), G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6, or TECRO E-1; applicants for diplomatic or official visas; applicants for renewal of B-1, B-2, B1/B2 visas or border crossing cards/visa labels for Mexican citizens, within 12 months of the expiration of the previous visa.

However, the notice also stated that consular officers still have the right to request in-person interviews in each specific case for any reason.
