On January 11, Argentine President Javier Milei invited Pope Francis to visit his homeland, in an effort to ease tensions with the head of the Vatican.

According to the Office of the President of Argentina, Mr. Milei clearly stated the invitation to Pope Francis to visit his homeland, at the date, time and place that the Pope desires, according to the wishes of the people who want to meet the Pope.
According to the Argentine Presidential Office, Pope Francis and Mr. Milei had a phone call after Mr. Milei was elected president. During the phone call, Mr. Milei invited the head of the Holy See to visit Argentina soon.
Pope Francis, an Argentinian, is the first Latin American to take up the post of head of the Vatican. The 87-year-old Pope Francis has expressed hope to make three trips in 2024, the first of which will be to Argentina.
Since taking office in 2013, he has not visited his homeland. The new President Milei's extreme statements have made many people skeptical about the possibility of Pope Francis returning to his homeland. Many Argentine priests and Catholics have publicly opposed Milei's statements about the Pope.
