Localities in Ha Tinh are continuing to strengthen disease prevention measures in livestock herds to avoid widespread spread, especially during the current season change.
From February 8, 2024 to present, in Tung Loc commune (Can Loc), 26 cows of 17 households in 3 villages of Tay Huong, Dong Quang Trung and Tay Quang Trung have been sick with symptoms such as lumps, swollen joints, loss of appetite and 2 cows died with a weight of 343 kg. It is worth mentioning that the sick cows have not been vaccinated against lumpy skin disease.
Leaders of Can Loc District People's Committee inspected lumpy skin disease prevention work on cattle in Tung Loc commune.
Faced with that situation, the District People's Committee directed the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock to send veterinary staff to households to inspect, verify information and guide localities to urgently implement disease prevention solutions according to regulations. Accordingly, test samples from 2 households in Tung Loc commune with sick cows tested positive for lumpy skin disease.
Mr. Nguyen Chi Tung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Tung Loc commune said: "After recording the disease, the local government proceeded to destroy the dead cows in accordance with regulations. At the same time, they put up disease warning signs, sprinkled more than 1.5 tons of lime powder and sprayed chemicals, disinfected, and sprayed mosquito repellent daily on a large scale. At the same time, the locality signed a commitment for livestock households not to hide the disease, not to sell, slaughter, or dispose of sick or suspected sick animals; and to vaccinate livestock against the disease according to regulations".
To control the widespread spread of the disease, especially in neighboring communes such as Thuan Thien, Thien Loc..., Can Loc District People's Committee has directed localities to step up propaganda and mobilize livestock farmers to strengthen disease prevention; deploy vaccination against lumpy skin disease for buffalo and cow herds. Specialized sectors have strengthened inspection and control at buffalo and cow markets, livestock slaughterhouses; if buffalo and cows die due to infection, immediately destroy them according to the correct procedure and strictly implement disinfection measures; guide and support livestock farmers to take care of and treat sick livestock promptly and safely.
In Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen), from February 4 to now, 2 pigs have been infected with African swine fever (not yet 21 days have passed). According to the commune leaders, the locality has focused on mobilizing resources to completely handle the outbreaks, not allowing the disease to break out and spread. The locality has organized a review, grasped the fluctuations of the total livestock herd, closely monitored the situation to detect early, handle the disease promptly; urgently organized vaccinations for livestock and poultry to contain and control the disease promptly.
Cam Xuyen district promotes vaccination of livestock.
Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Crops and Livestock in Cam Xuyen District said: "The total herd of buffalo and cows in the district is currently 24,000, the total herd of pigs is 54,000 and the total herd of poultry is 500,000. The weather after Tet, high humidity in the air affects the resistance of livestock, the risk of dangerous diseases arising and spreading in livestock and poultry is very high.
To prevent epidemics, local authorities at all levels and specialized sectors have instructed people to raise livestock in a disease-safe manner, using breeds of clear origin, fully vaccinating; regularly spraying disinfectants, cleaning the breeding environment, and ensuring barn conditions. At the same time, monitor, promptly detect and handle new outbreaks if any to minimize the risk of spreading, limit the impact on the environment; strictly control the transportation and trading of animals in the area, and control the slaughter of livestock and poultry.
Authorities strengthen management of trading, transportation and slaughter of animals and animal products.
According to statistics, the whole province has an estimated herd of 240,000 buffaloes and cows, 400,000 pigs and 10 million poultry. Before Tet, lumpy skin disease was detected in Tung Loc commune (Can Loc) and African swine fever in Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen). Up to now, disease control work on livestock in localities has been quite good, not spreading to other localities.
According to the leaders of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ha Tinh, localities need to continue to seriously implement regulations and synchronous solutions to prevent and control epidemics in livestock herds. Accordingly, strengthen the management of trading, transporting, and slaughtering of animals and animal products; promptly detect, prevent, and strictly handle cases of smuggling, illegal transportation, buying, selling, and slaughtering of sick livestock, and dumping of dead livestock that spread epidemics and pollute the environment.
Assign specialized staff to stay close to the grassroots to guide, direct, and closely monitor the disease situation in livestock and poultry to detect early and handle it promptly, absolutely not hiding the epidemic; take samples for diagnosis, testing, and promptly handle sick livestock and poultry according to regulations; prepare conditions to deploy vaccination against epidemics for livestock in 2024.
