According to information from Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC), the hospital's Gastroenterology Department admitted 1-year-old PPK in critical condition after swallowing a safety pin.

Previously, the family discovered the baby was sucking on a safety pin. In a panic, they tried to remove it and accidentally pushed the foreign object deeper into the throat.

The baby was taken to the district hospital, then transferred to Children's Hospital 2 at the 9th hour after swallowing the foreign object.

At the Emergency Department, through examination and endoscopic imaging, the doctor discovered that the safety pin was about 3 cm long, had come out in an L shape and the sharp tip was stuck in the esophagus wall, causing a very high risk of perforation, bleeding and infection.

Immediately, a team of doctors from the departments of Gastroenterology - Ear, Nose and Throat - Surgery was mobilized, consulted and prepared intervention plans.

With skill and coordination, the doctors successfully removed the foreign object using endoscopy, avoiding a complicated surgery for the baby.

When a child chokes on a foreign object such as a safety pin, what should be done?

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy - Deputy Head of Gastroenterology Department, Children's Hospital 2 - said:

"Foreign body ingestion is a common accident in young children, especially during the holidays when children are at home more and are less supervised. Common dangerous foreign objects include: button batteries, magnets, sharp objects, large objects (over 2.5 cm in children under 5 years old, over 5 cm in older children)."

When suspecting a child has swallowed a foreign object, doctors advise parents to absolutely not try to remove the object because doing so can easily push the object deeper in, or scratch the throat area.

Do not induce vomiting because it can cause foreign objects to get lost in the airway or cause dangerous choking.

The correct treatment is to take the child to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible for timely examination and treatment.
