Urgently harvest summer-autumn rice that has fallen due to heavy rain

In the recent heavy rains, 660 hectares of rice fell and nearly 333 hectares were flooded in the eastern communes and wards of the province, mostly fully ripe rice. These areas have been and are being accelerated for harvesting to avoid the approaching storm season.

In Hoa Phong field (Tay Hoa commune), over 89% of the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop has been basically harvested. Mr. Nguyen Van Dong, Director of Hoa Phong Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: "Currently, the Cooperative has harvested 500/557 hectares of rice, with a yield of 79.1 quintals/hectare. During the recent rains, the Cooperative had 10 hectares of rice flooded. To overcome this, the Cooperative had irrigation workers dredge the drainage ditches and cover all the irrigation culverts; as soon as the water recedes, the harvester is put into the field immediately, fearing that if it rains again, the soil will be soft and the machine cannot be harvested. For the flooded rice area that has fallen close to the ground, the harvester cannot enter, the Cooperative instructed people to quickly harvest by hand according to the motto "green at home is better than ripe in the field". To harvest on schedule according to plan, from the beginning, the Cooperative mobilized 32 combine harvesters. The Cooperative ensures that the entire area will be harvested by September 17".

The flooded and fallen rice area does not affect the 2025 summer-autumn rice harvest progress.
Many rice fields were flooded and felled after heavy rain.

Dong Hoa Ward has 98 hectares of fallen rice, up to now 92 hectares have been harvested. In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, Dong Hoa Ward sowed 2,078 hectares of rice, currently 1,425 hectares have been harvested.

Mr. Nguyen Hung Anh Kiet, Vice Chairman of Dong Hoa Ward People's Committee, said: "Usually, the rainy season starts at the end of September and the beginning of October, but this year, there was unusually heavy rain in early September, causing some ripe rice fields to fall over. However, because the water receded quickly and the sun shone brightly a few days later, it did not greatly affect the yield and quality of the rice. According to the plan, from now until September 20, the entire summer-autumn rice area will be harvested."

In addition to Dong Hoa ward, O Loan commune is also a locality with a large area of flooded and fallen rice due to recent heavy rains. However, up to now, 160/210 hectares of flooded rice in this commune have been harvested.

The areas are mainly harvested by combine harvesters.
The rain was heavy but the water receded quickly so most of the rice area was still harvested by combine harvesters.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, Party Secretary of O Loan commune, the flooding only lasted 5-6 hours but the water receded quickly because the land here is mainly sandy. The rice fields were not soft, so the harvest after the rain was not much affected and did not cause significant damage. However, to avoid re-raining causing the rice fields to be soaked with water, the locality directed that any fully ripe rice area be harvested quickly and not left in the field for too long, and that any area that was not yet ripe should be drained promptly by irrigation. The commune also considered a plan, in local conditions, to mobilize forces to support people in harvesting rice.

Mr. Truong Quang Tuong, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, informed: "The total area for sowing summer-autumn rice in 2025 in the eastern region of the province is 24,755 hectares with the main rice varieties: DV108, Dai Thom 8, BDR27, PY10 and additional varieties: MT10, BDB6, CH133, PY8... By September 15, farmers had harvested 10,000 hectares, accounting for over 40%. The estimated yield is 72 quintals/ha. According to the plan, by the end of September (from September 20 to 25), 100% of the area will be harvested."
