For the first time, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital performed live aortic valve replacement.

The 11th National Interventional Cardiology Conference recently took place in Gia Lai, attracting more than 1,000 cardiovascular experts from across the country.

The event, organized by the Vietnam Interventional Cardiology Association (under the Vietnam Cardiology Association), is one of the most prestigious and largest scientific forums in the field of interventional cardiology.

This year’s conference offers a rich academic program with many scientific reports, typical clinical cases and in-depth training sessions. The content ranges from complex coronary artery interventions, structural heart interventions, arrhythmia treatment to the application of advanced imaging technologies such as IVUS, OCT, FFR.

In particular, the conference emphasized the trend of developing minimally invasive techniques to optimize treatment effectiveness and improve patient safety.

At this year's conference, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital actively participated and left a profound professional mark through two live demonstrations: one transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) and one percutaneous coronary intervention.

Notably, this is also the first time that University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital has directly performed a "Valve-in-Valve TAVI" intervention - a technique of replacing a new aortic valve through a catheter, placed inside an old, degenerated biological valve.

The patient, 69 years old, had a history of biologic mitral valve replacement surgery 10 years ago, with many underlying diseases such as atrial fibrillation, preserved heart failure, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. This is considered a rare, complex and risky clinical case, requiring close coordination of the cardiovascular team (Heart-Team) including interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, internal cardiologists, diagnostic imaging and anesthesiologists.

Under the direct supervision of thousands of delegates, the team of University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City coordinated autonomously, mastered the technique, mastered the situation, coordinated effectively with the team and successfully placed the new SAPIEN 3 aortic valve through the catheter. The valve functioned well immediately after the procedure, hemodynamics improved significantly, and no acute complications were recorded.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital currently owns a modern Cath Lab system, advanced equipment and a team of experienced staff. The hospital has also deployed most of the advanced techniques in interventional cardiology: from PCI, TAVI, MitraClip, valvuloplasty, closure of congenital heart defects to peripheral vascular intervention and arrhythmia ablation. This foundation has helped the hospital successfully undertake many highly complex interventions, bringing new life to patients.

Associate Professor - Doctor - Doctor Nguyen Hoang Dinh, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, emphasized: "The direct performance of Valve-in-Valve TAVI at this conference is not only an opportunity for us to share in-depth experience but also clearly demonstrates the ability to master advanced interventional cardiovascular techniques of the team at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. This is not only a testament to the efforts of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in mastering advanced techniques but also a commitment to innovation and improving the quality of treatment, bringing maximum benefits to cardiovascular patients."
