Feeling the urge to urinate when lying down to sleep is not necessarily an abnormal sign. The first reason is that when lying down, the fluid in the legs will flow more easily to the kidneys, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

The feeling of needing to urinate when lying down at night, if it occurs frequently, will lead to nocturia.

With this amount of fluid, the kidneys will process and convert it into urine, leading to the bladder and as a result, many people have to urinate. However, if this happens frequently, forcing the sufferer to get up to urinate and lose sleep, it will become nocturia.

Older adults and those who are obese are at higher risk of experiencing nocturia. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) describes nocturia as one of the most bothersome urinary symptoms, and it is quite common.

For women who have just given birth, the condition of nocturia can be more severe. The reason is that childbirth affects the function of the muscles in the pelvic floor. If you sleep in a position that puts pressure on the bladder, it will increase the feeling of needing to urinate when lying down.

People with an enlarged prostate or problems with the uterus or ovaries may also feel the urge to urinate if they lie in a position that puts pressure on the bladder. Additionally, patients diagnosed with detrusor muscle disorders, also known as overactive bladder, may also feel the urge to urinate when lying down.

Health problems that contribute to nocturia include bladder stones, bladder cancer, cystitis, pelvic tumors, or urinary tract infections.

In addition to physical problems, psychological factors can also cause the sudden need to urinate after lying down. For example, you often have the habit of having to urinate before going to bed. In theory, this is reasonable because we will sleep for 7-8 hours so we need to empty our bladder.

However, forcing yourself to urinate even though it is not necessary before going to bed will create a reflex in the brain and bladder, stimulating the feeling of wanting to urinate as soon as you lie down.

To reduce the feeling of needing to urinate at night, experts recommend that in the evening, people should lie down or sit with their feet elevated above their hearts for about an hour. This will help the fluid from the feet enter the kidneys and be released into the bladder sooner, thereby limiting the feeling of needing to urinate early in the evening, according to Healthline .
