Bustling coastal area

In the past 3 years, fishermen in Lam Dong province have complained that their resources are increasingly depleted, and that long sea trips are just enough to cause losses. Meanwhile, in the coastal commune of Tan Thanh, the story of fishermen here regularly having a good harvest and enjoying the "blessings" of the sea makes everyone curious...

Tan Thanh commune was merged from 3 communes Tan Thuan, Tan Thanh and Thuan Quy, is a coastal commune of Lam Dong province, with a total natural area of 177.58 km2 and a total population of 31,309 people. Coming to Tan Thanh sea area right in the southern fish season, the story of the fish and shrimp season is bustling in the cafes along the coast. Ask anyone who works in the sea, they will happily boast that they are "in a good season".

Mr. Vo Viet Tuan (Thanh Phong village) said that it is the season of catching squid with snail shells, some days he can catch 40-50 kg of otter squid, with the price of about 100,000 VND/kg, earning 4-5 million VND/day. Not only Mr. Tuan, but many other fishermen in the area also cannot hide their joy when entering the peak season of harvesting "blessings" from the sea. These fishermen said that in the 8th - 9th lunar month, they switch to crab netting, snail trapping, squid fishing... which have higher economic value, will help fishermen have a decent income, thus reducing the burden of education costs for many families working in the sea here. “Thanh Phong village, Tan Thanh commune used to be considered the place with the highest rate of poor households in the commune, but now, the lives of the people have changed a lot, there are no more poor households and many families have become better off from the sea. Up to now, the poverty rate of Tan Thanh commune has decreased to 0.94% (compared to 1.02% in 2020)”, Mr. Dau Trong Trung - Chairman of the Fishermen Community Association of Tan Thuan commune shared.

The sweet fruit that we have today is probably thanks to the perseverance of the locality as well as the Fishermen's Community Association in its determination to implement the Co-management model to protect marine resources. Thanks to the support of the authorities, the activities of releasing artificial reefs and clusters of palm trees have been increasingly deployed by the people, aiming to mark the sea area for co-management, prevent the activities of prohibited fishing, especially trawls, line traps, and trawls, creating habitats and breeding grounds for aquatic resources. In particular, the "IUU Community Monitoring Team" model has been built and operated here - a model of the whole country. In addition, the Fishermen's Community Associations have stepped up propaganda and protection of the marked sea area. Thanks to that, the habitat of aquatic species has gradually been revived, and fishermen have had the opportunity to "have a good season" like in recent years.

Besides the fishing industry, the lives of the people of Tan Thanh commune also depend on agricultural production, in which the main crop is still dragon fruit. Although the price of dragon fruit fluctuates, in general, people have more or less income. In addition, a number of coastal resorts and homestays have come into operation along with high-tech agricultural farms welcoming guests in the area, creating a bustling and bustling atmosphere and solving a large amount of local labor resources in rural areas.

Therefore, in the coming term (2025 - 2030), the Tan Thanh Commune Party Committee determined to promote the protection and regeneration of aquatic resources associated with the responsibility of the community, in order to create long-term livelihoods and stabilize the lives of fishermen living along the coast and beaches. Only then will the efforts of the fishermen here who have worked hard to protect and preserve resources for future generations be duly rewarded.
