Interesting surprises about Japan's new banknotes

The new banknotes feature portraits of special characters and symbols typical of Japan.

The Bank of Japan will issue new banknotes in July 2024, marking the first change in the form of currency since 2004.

The newly issued banknotes will come in three denominations: 10,000 Yen, 5,000 Yen and 1,000 Yen, using hologram technology to prevent counterfeiting.

The new banknotes are issued by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) and printed by the National Printing and Printing Bureau. Prototypes have begun to be displayed at banknote museums and banks across Japan.

The new 10,000 Yen note features a portrait of Eiichi Shibusawa, a Japanese politician and businessman hailed as the father of Japanese capitalism. The 5,000 Yen note features Umeko Tsuda, a pioneering Meiji-era teacher who promoted women's education . The new 1,000 Yen note features microbiologist Shibasaburo Kitasato, who developed tetanus serum therapy and is known as the father of modern Japanese medicine.

The back of the three bills will feature 3D images of Tokyo Station, wisteria flowers and artist Katsushika Hokusai's painting of Mount Fuji.
