On the afternoon of December 8, the Provincial Red Cross Society, Kim Son District Red Cross Society coordinated with the Eye Bank - Central Eye Hospital to receive the cornea donated by Mr. Mai Quang Thieu, 62 years old, in Hamlet 5, Con Thoi Commune (Kim Son District).
While still alive, with the wish "Giving is forever", Mr. Mai Quang Thieu registered to donate his corneas to help blind people see the light.
Fulfilling the deceased's last wishes, after his death, his family coordinated with the Red Cross and the Central Eye Bank to receive his corneas.
This is the first cornea donation case in Ninh Binh province to be accepted again after a long interruption due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and is the 417th case in Kim Son district to have donated corneas after death.
As for Con Thoi commune, following the example of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa - the first person to donate a cornea in 2007 before passing away, which was recorded in the history of the Vietnamese Ophthalmology industry, the locality currently has many people registering and donating corneas after passing away.
Up to now, Ninh Binh province has had 504 cornea donors and 3 organ donors, leading the country in the number of cornea donors as well as organ donors after death.
At the donation ceremony, leaders of the Red Cross Society of the province, Kim Son district and doctors of the Eye Bank - Central Eye Hospital observed a minute of silence for the deceased and acknowledged the kindness and noble gesture of Mr. Mai Quang Thieu and his family.
The Red Cross at all levels also calls for and hopes that more people will volunteer to donate their organs and tissues after death, helping those who are unlucky enough to be sick or blind to be cured, have a happier life, and spread love and compassion in the community.
