Taking advantage of favorable weather, farmers in localities in Ha Tinh are focusing on restoring winter crop areas affected by floods.
Huong Khe is the locality most severely affected by the recent floods. As the floodwaters recede, farmers in the mountainous district are gradually reorganizing and stabilizing their lives; at the same time, taking advantage of the sunny days to go to the fields to organize production and restart the winter crop.
Farmers in Huong Binh commune (Huong Khe) resume winter crop production after floods.
Huong Binh (Huong Khe) is a low-lying commune with 100% of villages and hamlets deeply flooded in the recent flood, disrupting life and severely affecting agricultural production.
Mr. Dang Quoc Bao - Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Binh Commune said: "The flood has damaged more than 5 hectares of newly planted corn, 4 hectares of corn for grain and biomass corn in the growing period were knocked down and many areas of vegetables in household gardens were submerged by the flood. Currently, the weather is sunny and dry, the local government is encouraging people to actively stay in the fields, improve the soil, fertilize, sow seeds, and try not to "be late" with the crop schedule."
Along with Huong Binh, the remaining localities of Huong Khe are also "speeding" to restore production after the flood. Mr. Nguyen Tri Dong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Khe district said: "Widespread flooding damaged nearly 170 hectares of corn, sweet potatoes and vegetables of all kinds. Currently, the flood water has receded, the local government is propagating to people to resume the winter crop. We hope the province will study policies to support seeds and fertilizers so that people can quickly restore production and stabilize their lives."
Taking advantage of favorable weather, farmers in Can Loc district are also quickly reorganizing production. In recent days, from early morning, the family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xoan (Long Long village, Thuan Thien commune, Can Loc) quickly went to the field to "rescue" the onion after the rain.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Xoan's family (Thuan Thien commune, Can Loc) takes care of onions after the heavy rain.
Mrs. Xoan lamented: “The newly planted area was flooded for nearly 10 days, the sun rotted the roots, and there was a risk of mass death, so we had to remove them and invest in 100% new planting. As for the area of onions that were almost ready for harvest and were soaked in water, now the leaves are yellowing. After draining the water from the field, my husband and I are making beds, hoeing again to dry the soil, loosening it, and investing in manure, phosphate, potassium... to increase the resistance of the plants."
Currently, households in Thuan Thien commune are quickly restoring the area of scallion and shallots damaged by floods. Mr. Nguyen Nam Vu - Vice Chairman of Thuan Thien Commune People's Committee said: "This winter crop, the locality planted 55 hectares of green onions and 5 hectares of concentrated shallots. Heavy rains caused about 50% of the crop area to lose productivity and quality. There are even areas in low-lying villages such as Phuc Son, Lien Son... that have lost everything because the plants were submerged in water for a long time. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, the local government is mobilizing people to increase their presence in the fields, implementing measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases."
It is known that in addition to Thuan Thien, Thien Loc and Vuong Loc communes (Can Loc) have also proactively deployed the production of winter vegetables, ensuring the "closed" area according to the plan of 195 hectares. Along with restoring the area damaged by floods, the district also directed the localities in the Tra Son area of Can Loc to continue to closely monitor weather developments and encourage people to plant corn of all kinds according to the structure.
According to plan, in the 2023 winter crop, the whole province will produce 11,890 hectares of corn, vegetables, and sweet potatoes.
According to the Ha Tinh Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, as of November 6, 2023, the total winter crop planting area in the province reached 5,676/11,890 hectares (47.7% of the plan). Specifically: corn for grain 1,614 hectares/4,259 hectares (37.9% of the plan); biomass corn 95 hectares/1,649 hectares (5.8% of the plan); vegetables of all kinds 2,991 hectares/4,524 hectares (66.1% of the plan); sweet potatoes 976 hectares/1,458 hectares (66.9% of the plan).
Mr. Phan Van Huan - Head of the Department of Crop Production, Ha Tinh Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection said: "From October 28 to 31, 2023, heavy rains have affected crop production. According to initial statistics, the whole province has about 56 hectares of corn flooded and fallen; 46 hectares of vegetables of all kinds damaged... To restore crops after floods and continue to organize the 2023 winter crop, localities need to urge people to take advantage of favorable weather conditions and focus on directing production according to the set plan.
Localities need to prioritize the production of short-term vegetables, taking advantage of land funds for sowing biomass corn to serve as animal feed during the cold rainy season. In addition, proactively carry out the work of investigating, detecting, estimating, and forecasting promptly and accurately pests and diseases on crops such as fall armyworms that damage corn, leaf-eating worms, flea beetles, aphids that damage vegetable plants... to have timely and effective prevention and control measures.
