Paris fined for air pollution
Air quality measurements in Paris and Lyon showed that nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) levels in the two cities continued to exceed European standards, according to Bloomberg News on November 26.
In a ruling on November 24, the French Supreme Administrative Court concluded that current measures and future action plans are unlikely to reduce NO2 levels to safe levels in the short term.
The court therefore decided to impose a fine of 5 million euros on each city for violations in the period from mid-late 2022 to the first half of 2023.
The fine was reduced by 50% after taking into account improvements in some areas of Paris and Lyon.
Agencies responsible for responding to climate change and combating air pollution will be held accountable for paying fines.
After hearing the court's ruling, the French Environment Ministry said it was working to reduce toxic gas levels to safe levels as quickly as possible, both nationally and locally.
Previously, the French Supreme Administrative Court fined the government 30 million euros in 2021 and 2022 for failing to improve air quality to the permissible threshold.
The court said it would return to assess the French government's actions on the environment and air quality in 2024.
