Reuters reported on December 5 that France had imposed sanctions and frozen the assets of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. France had previously imposed sanctions on Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif and his deputy Marwan Issa on November 13.

France is working with partners to sanction Hamas individuals and financial networks at the European Union (EU) level, diplomats said.
Also in November, Britain imposed a travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo on four Hamas leaders, including Mr. Sinwar, and two of the force's financiers.

The French embargo comes as Israel enters a new phase of its military campaign to eradicate Hamas.
Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy said on December 5 that the war in the new phase will be difficult, but Israel is ready to listen to constructive suggestions to reduce damage to civilians.

The Israeli army announced on the same day that it had completely surrounded the Jabalya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. This is the largest refugee camp in this land and has been continuously attacked in recent days after the ceasefire agreement expired.
