Long Thanh Airport needs nearly 14,000 workers: What opportunities are there for college students?

In the context of major airports, including Long Thanh airport, being accelerated in construction and preparing for exploitation, the demand for human resources is increasing. Colleges have been implementing many suitable professions to meet this demand.

According to the plan of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, when Long Thanh airport is put into operation in phase 1 from 2026, the demand for human resources here is forecast to be very large with nearly 14,000 workers, spread across many fields.

Of these, about 2,200 have college and vocational degrees; the rest are unskilled, primary and university workers. In particular, foreign language requirements are also strict, from TOEIC 300 points or more for unskilled workers, to 500 points for managers. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for vocational training institutions in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City to prepare quality human resources to promptly meet actual needs.

Promoting business-school cooperation

At Lilama 2 International Technology College ( Dong Nai ), Master Nguyen Khanh Cuong, Principal of the school, said that the unit has signed training cooperation agreements with many businesses in the industry such as: Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), Saigon Ground Services Joint Stock Company (SAGS), Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (VAECO), Tan Son Nhat Cargo Services Joint Stock Company (TCS)...

According to Master Cuong, the training majors that directly and indirectly serve the aviation industry, mainly Long Thanh airport, include: aircraft maintenance (in collaboration with VAECO, currently 2 courses of students have participated), airport equipment maintenance, mechanical and electrical maintenance, mechanical equipment installation, electricity, welding, automobiles, logistics, accounting and administration...

“Students will learn basic knowledge at school, then transfer to businesses for in-depth training, professional practice and have the opportunity to be recruited immediately after graduation,” added Master Cuong.

According to the Principal of Lilama 2 International Technology College, the school is implementing a plan to send about 70 students with TOEIC scores of 300 or higher to ACV for interviews, in order to prepare a team to directly serve Long Thanh airport.

According to Mr. Cuong, this coordination model has helped to clearly define roles: the school takes care of the foundation, the business undertakes specialized vocational training, thereby minimizing the risk of students graduating without meeting practical needs.

Also in Dong Nai, in mid-2024, Dong Nai High Technology College also signed an agreement with Vietjet Aviation Academy (VJAA) to cooperate in training aviation human resources in the following professions: maintenance and repair of aircraft and aircraft equipment; control and operation of aviation equipment and vehicles operating in restricted areas of airports; ground operations serving flights.

In addition, every year, Cao Thang Technical College (HCMC) also organizes retraining courses for engineers and technicians working at the airport according to orders from businesses, especially in the CNC mechanical field, to update operating, programming, and automatic processing skills.

The number of learners does not match actual needs.

Not only Lilama 2, many other colleges have also participated in training human resources for the aviation industry.

Dr. Tran Manh Thanh, Principal of Bach Viet College of Technology (HCMC), said that the school is one of the few colleges in Vietnam that offers aviation training. The school is currently offering two main majors: air transport business administration and aviation commercial services. In addition, the school is expanding into aviation logistics to meet practical needs.

“These are fields of study that do not worry about unemployment, because there is a serious shortage of aviation human resources, while not only Long Thanh airport but also a series of other airports across the country that are being and will be invested in such as Gia Binh, Liem Tuyen, Sa Pa, Mang Den, Van Phong, or the expansion of Tan Son Nhat T3 terminal, all need human resources,” Dr. Thanh emphasized.

Meanwhile, Cao Thang Technical College plays an important role in training technical majors for the airport. Dr. Tong Trung Nhan, Vice Principal of the school, said that the school trains in many fields such as mechanics, electricity, electronics, automation, information technology, mechatronics, etc. These are majors that are not directly labeled “aviation”, but students studying these majors can also serve the technical departments in the airport.
