Duc Vinh, 5th year medical student, Hanoi Medical University: Wrapping banh chung is my favorite thing about Tet.

For me, Vietnamese Tet is always a special, warm and meaningful time. In the days leading up to Tet, my family and I often prepare many things together, from cleaning the house, decorating the house to wrapping banh chung. Wrapping banh chung is what I like most about Tet. It is not only a job but also a moment of reunion. Each member of the family contributes: some cut dong leaves, some prepare sticky rice and meat, some wrap the cakes, some tie the strings. While doing it, everyone chats and shares memories, happy and sad stories of the past year. This creates a very close and warm atmosphere, making me always feel excited every time Tet comes.

On the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, my family always prepares a traditional meal to offer to our ancestors, showing respect to our roots. After that, the whole family will visit relatives and neighbors, celebrate Tet and exchange best wishes for the new year. For some people, Tet may not be so special anymore because connecting with family has become easier thanks to technology nowadays. For example, my family and I often video call when I am away from home, so we don’t feel too far apart.

But even with the support of technology, sitting together in person, eating New Year's Eve dinner or making banh chung is still something that cannot be replaced. Above all, for those who live far from home like me, I see Tet as a holiday that can also be a long holiday back home.

Nguyen Van Vu - Master of Han Nom: Tet is an occasion for family reunion and joy.

“The first day of Tet is for fathers, the second day is for mothers, the third day is for teachers” is a familiar saying to Vietnamese people. Nowadays, as society develops and life becomes busier, many people find Tet increasingly bland.

"Tet is an occasion for reunion and joy with family and friends. Tet is an occasion to express gratitude to grandparents, parents and teachers. Tet is an occasion to pray for good luck. People make appointments to go to the Temple of Literature, Ngoc Son Temple, and places where scholars and intellectuals are worshiped to pray for progress in their studies, a successful career, and hope for a good new year.

"Tet is for traveling , experiencing Tet, not going back to hometown, so Tet for teachers becomes old in the eyes of young people. However, for new university students, the first year going back to hometown for Tet, Tet for teachers becomes an occasion to gather, meet teachers, meet friends," Vu shared.
