According to the Department of Food Poisoning Surveillance and Information and Communication, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety, moon cakes are produced and processed seasonally and are used for a short period of time.

Specifically, the product packaging must be intact and not torn; the packaging must clearly state the manufacturer's name, production address, product ingredients, instructions for use and preservation, and the production date and expiry date.

Regarding product quality, the shape of the moon cake must be uniform, not cracked, crushed or deformed. The cake must not be moldy, the color must be harmonious (the typical color of baked cakes), and there must be no unusual color. In addition, the cake must not have a strange taste; there must not be a rancid or moldy smell when opening the product packaging.

The Food Safety Department ( Ministry of Health ) added that when buying moon cakes, people should choose at fixed stores and stalls with clear addresses.

Cakes must be displayed in hygienic conditions, with glass cabinets or covers to protect from dust, insects and ensure suitable temperature.

People should prioritize products produced by brands and manufacturers that are known to many consumers and have specific contact information on the product label. Absolutely do not choose products with blurred labels, missing information or signs of erasure.

Consumers should also pay attention to the appearance of the product. Do not use cakes that show signs of oil leakage or discolored fillings, as these may be damaged or unsafe products.

After purchase, proper storage and use are also very important. Cakes should be kept in a cool place, away from high temperatures, high humidity and direct sunlight.

For fresh cakes, people should keep them refrigerated and use them within a short time according to the manufacturer's instructions on the product packaging. They should be eaten immediately after opening the packaging and avoid leaving cut cakes or leftover cakes in the environment for a long time.

Previously, Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety, said that the unit had a plan to prevent food poisoning during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.

Specifically, the Department will set up inspection teams (replacing previous inspection teams) to work and monitor the operations of moon cake production facilities.

Authorities will pay special attention to small-scale production and "homemade" moon cakes. Because this type of cake is considered to pose a very high risk to food safety.

Tightening food safety to have Vietnamese Pho festival in Singapore

At the press conference announcing the first Vietnam Pho Festival in Singapore (Vietnam Pho Festival 2025, taking place on October 18-19), organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore in collaboration with Tuoi Tre newspaper and the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, the organizers said they will introduce over 20 delicious Vietnamese dishes to the host country. Of which, there are 5 units providing 5 different types of pho.

This is not only a culinary event but also a tool to promote the national brand, so that each bowl of pho becomes a tourist ticket inviting guests from Singapore to Vietnam.

Regarding food safety, Singapore has very strict and stringent requirements on cuisine. To meet the regulations of the neighboring country, the organizing committee has registered Vietnamese "5-star chefs" to take a culinary course and be granted a pass to participate in the festival.

"Ensuring food safety and hygiene is a top priority, all processed ingredients must meet standards. In addition, we also have to apply for work permits for the booths... All regulations set forth by Singapore must be fully complied with," the organizers shared.
