German Chancellor Olaf Scholz brought a large suitcase during his visit to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on December 2, causing much curiosity about what was inside.

On December 2, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, the leader’s first trip to Ukraine in two and a half years. Instead of carrying his usual leather briefcase, Mr. Scholz carried a large silver suitcase when he stepped off the train.

According to UNN, in a press conference later, when asked about the suitcase, Prime Minister Scholz replied: "How detailed do you want to know? It only contains the necessary items that are usually carried on the road."

Previously, netizens had humorous comments and made photos of Mr. Scholz holding the suitcase. Some accounts said he brought coffee and bread, others said he personally brought a 650 million euro arms aid package for Ukraine. Some people said that the German Chancellor put his favorite leather briefcase in the suitcase. According to the dpa news agency, Mr. Scholz always carries with him the leather briefcase that he used when he was a lawyer about 40 years ago.

Some people even remade the photo, replacing the suitcase with a Taurus missile, a weapon that Ukraine has asked Germany to provide but which the country has so far refused.

During the visit, Chancellor Scholz met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirmed Germany's support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's military campaign. "I want to make it clear here that Germany will remain Ukraine's strongest supporter in Europe," Mr. Scholz said.

Mr. Scholz previously traveled to Kyiv in June 2022 with French President Emmanuel Macron and then-Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, marking the first visit by the three European leaders since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Under Chancellor Scholz’s leadership, Germany has become Ukraine’s second-largest military donor after the United States. However, Scholz has been criticized for his cautious approach to some key issues, such as his refusal to supply long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, according to The Kyiv Independent .
