Tokyo launches dating app to boost birth rate

Việt NamViệt Nam05/06/2024

To sign up for the app, users will have to undergo an interview to confirm their identity. They will also be asked to submit documents proving their single status and sign a letter expressing their willingness to marry. Disclosure of one’s income is common on Japanese dating apps, but Tokyo authorities will require users to provide tax payment certificates to prove their annual salary.

A Tokyo government official in charge of the new app said survey data showed that 70 percent of those who want to get married are not actively participating in events or apps to find a partner, so the government hopes to give them the motivation to find a suitable "other half" through this new app.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated Japan's demographic challenges, with fewer couples getting married in recent years causing a drop in the birth rate and a higher death toll. Preliminary government data showed the number of babies born in Japan fell for the eighth consecutive year to 758,631, down 5.1% from the previous year. The number of deaths was 1,590,503.

Japan is facing a growing labor shortage. With its population aging, the Japanese government is working to prevent population decline and increase the birth rate. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has pledged to implement policies such as financial support for families, easier access to childcare and increased parental leave.
