US President Joe Biden on December 1 pardoned his son Hunter Biden, a decision that goes against his previous statements.
The Washington Post reported on December 1 that Mr. Biden used executive power to pardon his son Hunter, who was convicted of gun possession charges in Delaware and had previously pleaded guilty to tax evasion in California.
"Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the decision-making process of the US Department of Justice . I kept that promise even as I witnessed my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted," the White House said in a statement. Mr. Biden pardoned the crimes in the two cases mentioned above of his son.

“No rational person looking at the facts of Hunter’s case could come to any other conclusion than Hunter is being criticized simply because he is my son. I hope the American people will understand why a father, and a president, would make this decision,” Biden added.
This year, Mr. Biden repeatedly affirmed that he would not pardon his son, but observers said that this statement was to prevent potential disadvantages to the Democratic Party's election campaign. Now that the results are in, President Biden's move is expected to have few political consequences, as his term is about to end.
Hunter Biden was convicted by a federal jury in Delaware in June of lying on a 2018 gun purchase form, claiming he did not use illegal drugs. US authorities later found he was using drugs while in possession of the weapon. Hunter also pleaded guilty in September to nine federal tax charges.
President Biden has repeatedly expressed pride in his son Hunter’s sobriety, and Hunter has appeared in several of his father’s key moments this year.
