The Kyiv Independent news site reported on February 11 that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced additional senior positions in the military, after appointing former Army Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief on February 8.

Speaking on television, the leader announced the appointment of two new deputies to Mr. Syrskyi and three new deputies to Chief of the General Staff Anatolii Barhylevych.

After appointing Mr. Syrskyi to replace General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, President Zelensky on February 9 appointed Mr. Barhylevych to replace Mr. Sehiy Shaptala. Previously, Mr. Zaluzhnyi and Mr. Shaptala had led the Ukrainian army since the beginning of the campaign against Russia.

Among the two new deputy chiefs of the general staff is Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, commander of the 59th Special-Purpose Motorized Rifle Brigade. This officer will focus on unmanned systems and developing their use in the military.

The new deputy chief of the general staff, Colonel Andrii Lebedenko, will focus on innovation, especially the army's technological components and combat systems.

Mr Barhylevych's new deputies include officers Volodymyr Horbatiuk, Oleksii Shevchenko and Mykhailo Drapatyi.

Mr Horbatiuk's job is to ensure that all headquarters have "100%" knowledge of what is happening on the front line. Mr Shevchenko will focus on logistics, while Mr Drapatyi will be responsible for preparing and providing high-quality training for soldiers.

"Now, people who are famous in the military and who themselves know what the army needs are taking on new tasks. All the practical experience of our combat commanders, combat brigades and units, who have built a high-quality system of training soldiers, must be applied for the success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," said President Zelensky.
