Prices increased simultaneously

These days, in key coconut growing communes of Vinh Long province such as Quoi Dien, Cau Ke, Giong Trom, it is easy to see the bustling scene of gardeners harvesting, and traders continuously coming to the gardens to weigh and buy.

The price of dried coconut is currently at 210,000 - 240,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits), an increase of 20,000 VND/dozen compared to last week and 100,000 VND/dozen higher than at the beginning of the year. This is considered a record high price ever.

Businesses and gardeners are excited when durian prices increase again.

Ms. Kim Thi Hong, a long-time trader in Cau Ke happily said: “At the beginning of the year, dry coconuts were only around 130,000 - 140,000 VND/dozen, we traders bought sparingly. Now the price has increased to 210,000 - 215,000 VND/dozen, sometimes up to 240,000 VND, people are very happy. I bought them and felt happy for them because it was the first time dry coconuts were sold at such a price.”

Not only traders, coconut growers also seem to have been relieved of their burden. Mr. Nguyen Van Bay, a gardener in Mo Cay shared: “A few years ago, the price of coconut was low, after deducting costs, it was considered break-even, many people planned to cut it down and plant other trees. Now, the price of coconut has increased continuously since the beginning of the year, maintained at a high level, people have made a decent profit. I calculate that each hectare of coconut after deducting costs is double the profit compared to last year.”

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, the whole province currently has nearly 120,000 hectares of coconut, accounting for nearly 50% of the coconut area in the country. The locality is aiming to increase the area to 132,000 hectares by 2030, with an output of more than 1.5 million tons, continuing to affirm that coconut trees are a key industrial crop. Coconut trees are also considered a crop that adapts well to climate change and saline intrusion, creating stable livelihoods for about 270,000 households.

Explaining the reason for the high price of coconuts, an official from the Department of Industry and Trade of Vinh Long province said that the current output of coconuts in the garden has decreased compared to previous months, while the demand for purchasing for export and processing in the country has increased sharply. “Several candy factories and coconut oil processing factories are collecting goods for Tet. Whole fruit for export is also scarce, so we have to raise the price to collect enough goods to deliver,” said this official.

Not only coconut, many other fruits in the West are also entering a new period of price increase. Durian, a major export fruit, has increased sharply in price again after a period of dramatic decline.

Need a consumer market

Mr. Huynh Thanh Nha, garden owner and durian trader in Cai Be commune, Dong Thap province, said that more than a month ago, Ri 6 was only sold for about 30,000 VND/kg, now it has increased to nearly 50,000 VND/kg. Thai durian (Monthong) also increased from 60,000 to nearly 90,000 VND/kg. The price increase is because the season is almost over in the region, the supply is scarce, while the domestic and export markets are in need of a lot of goods.

According to Mr. Nha, with the current price, gardeners can make a profit of 10,000 - 30,000 VND/kg depending on the quality. Good prices help people feel secure in taking care of their gardens. There will be a new crop in about 3 months, everyone hopes that the price will remain at this level or higher to make up for the previous time.

Jackfruit is also a fruit with positive price signals .

Jackfruit is also a fruit with positive signs. According to jackfruit purchasing warehouses in My Loi commune, Dong Thap province, the price of Thai jackfruit grade 1 is at 26,000 VND/kg, grade 2 is about 16,000 VND/kg. In particular, red-fleshed jackfruit grade 1 is up to 38,000 VND/kg, a higher price compared to the first half of the year.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Loc, the owner of a jackfruit farm in My Loi, commented: “The price of jackfruit has increased in the past few days, making it more bustling for traders like us. People who pick jackfruit to sell are always smiling because the price was so low a few months ago that many fruits had to be left on the trees.”

At the same time, Hoa Loc mango, a famous specialty of Dong Thap and some neighboring provinces, is also selling at a high price, ranging from 100,000 to 120,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. This is considered a "reasonable" price for gardeners after a long period of difficulty.

Mr. Pham Van Cuong, a long-time mango farmer in Cao Lanh ward (Dong Thap province) said: "Although the current mango price is not as high as a few years ago, it is much better than at the beginning of the year. I am focusing on processing the flowers to supply in time for Tet, hoping that the price will remain high."

The increase in fruit prices across the board is creating an optimistic atmosphere in the Western region. Many gardeners are taking advantage of the time to take care of, fertilize, and prune their trees in preparation for the upcoming season.

Mr. Phan Van Bay confided: “Farming is very hard, we just hope to have a good harvest and sell it for a good price. Good prices like now help us have money to reinvest in our gardens, repair our houses, and pay for our children's education.”

The increase in fruit prices not only helps improve people's income but also stimulates production, maintains the area of key crops, and serves exports. According to agricultural experts, to stabilize prices in the long term, it is necessary to add solutions for storage, deep processing and expanding consumption markets to avoid the situation of good harvest and falling prices.
