Van Lang University speaks out about male student wearing military uniform and high heels catwalking at opening ceremony

TPO - A clip recording a male student wearing military uniform and high heels walking the catwalk with twisting movements, surrounded by many cheering and shouting students was shared at a dizzying speed with comments saying that this is an inappropriate behavior and needs to be corrected.

The clip, after being posted, quickly attracted the attention of the online community through sharing and accompanying comments. Most of the comments said that the above images were inappropriate, excessively teasing, offensive and needed to be corrected.

On the afternoon of August 29, Tien Phong reporter had an interview with Dr. Vo Van Tuan, Permanent Vice Principal of Van Lang University about the above clip.

According to Mr. Tuan, from August 11 to August 18, Van Lang University organized a National Defense and Security course for the 29th course (first year, enrollment in 2023). In this course, in addition to the teaching content implemented according to regulations, the University organized a series of experiential activities to arouse the military spirit, helping students understand more deeply the historical significance and tradition of protecting the Fatherland, such as: learning to sing and perform songs about soldiers; participating in learning about the nation's revolutionary history; collective folk dance activities, folk games, organizing birthday parties for students participating in the course.

“In the series of experiential activities above, there is an activity called “Soldier Beauty” taking place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, to honor the beauty and spirit of soldiers. In this activity, students have the opportunity to participate in art performances and fashion shows in military uniforms. During the performance, a student behaved inappropriately while wearing military uniform. The video recording this student’s performance recently went viral on social networks, causing negative reactions from the public,” said Mr. Tuan.

Mr. Tuan added that after receiving information about the above incident, the Party Committee and the School's Board of Directors immediately worked with the Department of National Defense and Security Education , teachers organizing the program, and students to re-evaluate the incident.

“The above incident is part of an experiential activity for students in the study plan. The image of the opening ceremony backdrop seen in the video is the backdrop of a previous opening ceremony,” Mr. Tuan said, adding that the school is aware that the above incident has a negative impact on the image of soldiers, and would like to take full responsibility and seriously learn from the above incident and pledge not to let similar cases happen again.
