Ukraine in talks with Canada on security guarantees

On August 26, Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said that his country and Canada have begun negotiations on security guarantees.

Writing on Telegram , he stated: “Ukraine has started negotiations with Canada on a bilateral agreement on the provision of security guarantees, as stated in the Joint Statement on Support to Our Country. On the instructions of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, I am coordinating these negotiations.”

The first round of negotiations was chaired by Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Zhovkva.

Mr. Yermak also said that the bilateral security guarantees that Ukraine must receive now will make the country safer, even before it is recognized as an official member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Security guarantees for Ukraine must be effective and serve as a transitional stage in our country's path to joining this military alliance, the most reliable security guarantee today,” he said.

Thus, after the US and the UK, Canada has become the third country in the Group of Seven (G7) to enter into negotiations with Ukraine. Currently, these countries are actively promoting the implementation of the security agreement with Kiev.
