Coffee exports set a new record

Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, said: Coffee export turnover increased sharply in the past 6 months thanks to the high average export price of Vietnam's coffee, reaching more than 5,700 USD/ton, an increase of more than 59% over the same period last year.

The high price of coffee is partly due to fluctuations in the world market's coffee supply, and partly due to the significant improvement in the quality of Vietnamese coffee in the past 10 years. Famous roasters in Europe, the US, and Italy all know and use Vietnamese Robusta coffee.

Since 2023, coffee export prices have continuously reached new peaks, and the same is expected in 2025. Currently, Phuc Sinh continues to develop specialty coffee lines from Arabica coffee from the Northwest region, namely Honey Process Coffee and Natural Process Specialty Coffee.

Thanks to special attributes such as flavor, acidity, sweetness, balance, and purity, specialty coffee has high added value and is favored by customers in many countries.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shows that Germany, Italy and Spain were the three largest coffee consuming markets of Vietnam in the past 6 months, accounting for 16.3%, 7.9% and 7.4% market shares respectively. In the first five months of 2025 alone, coffee exports to Germany increased 2.2 times, Italy increased 45.1%, Spain increased 55.8%.

Among the 15 major export markets, the value of coffee exports increased the most in the Mexican market with an increase of 71.6 times; China, although having the lowest increase, also reached 22.9%.

Notably, the increase in Arabica and processed coffee exports shows that the Vietnamese coffee industry is tending to invest heavily in technology and Arabica raw material areas, shifting to exporting value-added products, meeting the consumption needs of the European Union (EU), US and Japanese markets with high-quality products.

Besides, multiple markets The increase in coffee consumption also creates room for Vietnamese export businesses such as the UK and Canada.

Enterprises need to improve quality, invest in clean processing technology, build reputable and sustainable brands, and effectively take advantage of tariff advantages from free trade agreements signed with many countries and regions around the world.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Quan, Trade Counselor, Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium and the EU, said: In the first four months of 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports to the EU reached 983.2 million EUR, an increase of 30% over the same period in 2024. However, Vietnam mainly exports raw coffee, which has not created high added value, so profits are still low.

“To effectively exploit the EU market, businesses need to focus on differentiated product lines, including: high-quality coffee, processed coffee, certified coffee and specialty coffee.

Besides, the EU market is shifting strongly towards green and clean consumption with the application of sustainable development standards on labor and environment; while consumers are not only concerned about price and product quality but also about the production process of goods, so businesses need to quickly catch up with this trend," Mr. Quan recommended.

The record export turnover of 5.45 billion USD in the first half of 2025 not only reflects the resilience of the Vietnamese coffee industry, but also shows the great demand of the world market for this product.

In the context that world coffee prices are forecast to continue to increase in the coming time, while production in many countries is decreasing, Vietnamese coffee has many opportunities to "set new peaks" in both selling price and turnover if it soon makes a strong shift from exporting raw materials to exporting deeply processed products with instant coffee and specialty coffee lines with high economic value.
