The 10 countries with the most tourists in the world are all in Europe, with Luxembourg leading the way with an average of 4.3 foreign trips per year.

Data from Our World in Data, a market analysis organization based on research by hundreds of economic historians, shows that Luxembourg citizens travel the most in the world. According to experts, the high standard of living and the country's landlocked location between France, Germany, and Belgium make it convenient for citizens to travel internationally. On average, each Luxembourg citizen makes 4.3 international trips per year.

In the table passport ranking the world's most powerful 2025 Henley Passport Index announced on January 8, Luxembourg passport is in the top 4, along with Austria, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Citizens of this country are allowed to enter without a visa in advance or only need to apply for a visa at the border, an electronic travel permit or an e-visa in 191 countries and territories. This is also one of the reasons that encourages Luxembourgers to travel more and all year round.

Slovenia ranks second on the list of countries with the most international tourists. The Central European country is known as the "rising star" of the continent thanks to its historic and ancient cities, clear blue lakes, and towering mountain peaks. Not only does it have a landscape that attracts tourists, its people are also very "willing" to travel. On average, they travel internationally 1.4 times a year. Belgians rank third with an average number of trips abroad of 1.3 times.

These outbound trips are counted by Our World In Data as both leisure and business trips, and include overnight stays.

In October 2024, the British Travel Association (ABTA) found that Brits are taking more holidays than ever, with an average of 3.94 in 2024. However, this figure is based on a survey of only 2,000 people and is not representative of the whole country.

“Tourism has grown dramatically in recent decades,” notes Our World in Data. The rise of air travel has made it easier for people around the world to travel domestically and internationally. By 2019, international travel had doubled compared to 2000. According to Our World in Data, tourism is important to both tourists and the people in the countries they visit. For tourists, traveling helps them understand and appreciate the people and cultures of each country they visit.
